Year-Round Swimming

For Those Interested in Winter Swimming

The Washington DC metropolitan area is one of the most active regions for competitive swimming in the country.  A few facts concerning local competitive club swimming:

  • The clubs offer programs varying from swim lessons to competitive and non-competitive programs for swimmers who are interested in improving as a summer league swimmer, or high-school swimmer, to those who are interested in swimming as a year round sport.   Most clubs have enough options to allow a swimmer to be as serious or casual in their level of training as they wish.

If you think your child may be interested in competitive year-round swimming, you should know that it is not similar to summer league swimming. In general, it does not have the same community feel or team spirit you will find at Glenwood. And if you thought summer meets are long…… enough said. On the positive side, your child can make a lot of good friends, have fun and improve as a swimmer, but the practice, training and meet attendance expectations are more challenging and demanding. Make sure your child not only really wants to swim, but loves to swim, before committing to a competitive program.  There is great variety in the size, focus (competitive vs. developmental), facilities, and program costs of the clubs.  We suggest you speak to some of the families who have swimmers in year round swimming to gain a better insight into what to expect.  If you do decide to register your child in a year round swim program, get to know the veteran parents in the winter program you select -- it will help immeasurably with car pools, free shipping from swimoutlet.com, and other joys of parenting a swimmer. Registration and signups for nearly all swim programs begin in late August or early September for the winter and late March/April for spring.
