Meets

A meets are scheduled and regulated by the Montgomery County Swimming League (MCSL). The league is divided into divisions of six teams each, and each team swims the other five teams in their division once in a dual meet. These dual meets are always scheduled on Saturday mornings. Then all six team compete at once in the Relay Carnival and the Divisional meet.

The coach picks who swims in A meets based on times and attendance at a minimum of two practices in the week before the meet. A swimmer is allowed to compete in a maximum of 5 events, with no more than 3 of them individual stroke events. There is one heat of each event for boys and girls, with the exception of freestyle which has two heats for each age group. At the A meets, we are limited to replacing three swimmers who are sick or do not show up.  Thus, if we have more than three No Shows, we will have to swim empty lanes—not good for winning and really not good for team spirit.  The six dual A meets start at 9:00 Saturday morning, with check-in at 7:30 or 8:00 a.m. depending on location.  The meets usually end by 11:30 or noon.

********NEW FOR 2011******

All swimmers have been automatically committed to attend all meets and time trials for the season.  If your children are unable to swim in a Saturday A meet, you must login to your account, select the appropriate Meet on the Events page, select the name of your child who will be unable to attend a meet and then change the Declaration box from “Yes, please sign [name of child] up for this event” to “No thanks, [name of child] will NOT attend this event.”  Then be sure to scroll down and click SAVE.  As in previous years, Coach Nathan will choose the events your child will swim in all Saturday A meets.

B meets are scheduled by the team reps who try to find teams compatible in size, speed, and philosophy that are also geographically close, since these meets are usually swum on Wednesday nights. All teams have their own rules as to who swims in the meets and they differ widely from team to team. The Gators have the rule that a swimmer may sign up for any event that they did not score in (achieve 1st through 5th place) during the previous Saturday meet, so long as they follow the 5 event, no more than 3 individual strokes rule. There are as many heats of each event as needed to allow all swimmers to participate. Sometimes, in the interest of time, boys and girls may swim in the same heat, but they will be scored with their own gender.

B meets are scheduled by the host team but usually start around 6:00 p.m. with check-in around 5:00 p.m.  Because the meets have multiple heats of most events and weather is sometimes a factor, it is harder to predict when they will end.  At Potomac Glen, we usually end by 9:30 and must stop the meet at 10:00 p.m.  Most other pools will also try to finish by then.

********NEW FOR 2011******

Like A Meets, all swimmers have been automatically committed to attend B Meets for the season.  If your children are unable to swim in a B Meet, you should login to your account, select the appropriate Meet on the Events page, select the name of your child who will be unable to attend a meet and then change the Declaration box from “Yes, please sign [name of child] up for this event” to “No thanks, [name of child] will NOT attend this event.”  If your child is available to swim in a Wednesday B Meet, you still need to login to choose the events your child(ren) will swim.  Click on the box next to the event(s) for which you are signing up your child(ren). A check mark will appear in the box. Then be sure to scroll down and click Save Changes.
