All-City DIVE 2019 at Ridgewood
What to expect at Ridgewood and Shorewood during this week
On July 29 & 30, the 13 city league pools will gather at Monona for the All-City championship dive meet. Approximately 300 divers of all levels compete at All-City over this two day event. This is the culmination of the All-City dive season, and you will see some fabulous diving!
For more details, schedules, senior dive recognition sign up, etc, go to www.allcityswimdive.org
Warm ups for Shorewood divers at West Side will be held on Sunday July 28 at 6:00 PM. Your diver needs to be there 15 minutes ahead of time to talk to the coaches and warm up. You must be registered for this event with the Shorewood Dive Coaches by mid-July and must plan to have competed in 3 dual meets prior to All-City Dive.
Competition on both days begins at 8 AM, with warm ups beginning at 6:30 AM. Girls dive before boys. All divers in the 10 & Under category will dive 3 preliminary dives. Their score on preliminary dives determines whether they make it to the finals and perform there final 2 dives. For divers over 10, there are 4 preliminary dives, and the score from those 4 dives determines whether you go on to finals or not. Final 2 dives are performed by those making it to finals.

All-City SWIM 2019 at West Side Pool
What to expect at West Side and Shorewood during this week
From August 2nd through August 4th, all the league pools will gather at West Side for the All-City championship swim meet. All-City is one of the largest outdoor swim meets in the country, with well over 1,500 swimmers competing. This is the culmination of the All-City swim season. More info is at https://swim.moallcity.com/
For new swimmers and their families, it can seem a bit intimidating. It may seem like three days of chaos, but it really is a well-run event. Here’s some info to help you out.
Tons of All-City information is on the West Side All-City Website. You’ll find information on parking, the psych sheet (the psych sheet lists all entries and seed times), results, and even live streaming video on the internet for those of you trapped at the office, or for tech-savvy out-of-town grandparents. Also, at the All-City warm ups on Sunday July 28, the team will get a tour of the grounds and many of your questions will be answered.
Tent City: Shorewood has a large tent (as does each pool) for our swimmers belongings and where we’ll all hang out for All-City. Remember, wear shoes or flip-flops. Feel free to bring chairs, blankets, etc. Remember on Sunday the entire team will be there, and real estate will be at a premium, so don’t spread out too much when you set up. Also, please keep the tent clean by picking up after yourself.
Relays: 11 & up swimmers swim their individual preliminary races Friday, August 2nd; 10 & under swimmers swim on Saturday, August 3rd. 8&under relays are on Saturday, August 3rd. 11-12 Medley relays are on Friday. All other relays are on Sunday. If you don’t plan to be there Sunday don’t sign up for relays so you aren’t put on a relay team. Sunday is the big day at All-City! If you are on a relay team, don’t let your team down by not showing up on Sunday. Please understand that relay lineups on the heat sheet are subject to change based on preliminary swims. REMEMBER ALL WARM-UPS ARE AT SHOREWOOD.
Swim Events: Each swimmer swims two (2) individual events and two relays (we hope 2 each, depending on the number of swimmers entered). If your swimmer places in the top 18 in his/her individual preliminary event, they will get to swim in the finals on Saturday. There are tons of swimmers at All-City – some of them are VERY fast - so don’t feel like you didn’t do a good job if you don’t make the finals. Swim your best and try to get a best time.
Awards: Medals are given for 1 - 3rd place, and ribbons for 4th - 18th. Heat winner ribbons are given. Also, every child who participates gets a participation award of some kind, so check at the awards table to get yours.
Clerk of Course: Swimmers of ALL ages will be clerked in the Clerk of Course tent for All-City for all three days. Swimmers will need to report to the clerk well in advance of their race. There will be announcements in tent city about first, second and final call for reporting to the clerk, but don’t wait until the final call to race to the clerk. There can be long waits in the Clerk of Course, so make sure you’ve had a drink and restroom stop before heading to the Clerk of Course. Note that parents are not allowed in the Clerk of Course.
Swimmer Seeding at All-City for the preliminary (Friday and Saturday) events is usually "wedge seeding" In the dual meets, the fastest swimmers are in the last heat. In "circle seeding" the fastest swimmers are distributed throughout the heats. Remind your swimmers that they are racing against the clock and need to go as fast as they can, and not only as fast as the swimmer in the next lane.
Parent's Job: Your toughest job as a parent will be keeping track of your kids and getting them to the Clerk of Course on time. The kids tend to run around and have a good time, while their parents spend a lot of time looking for them. There will be hundreds of swimmers there for prelims and well over 1,000 on Sunday, so finding your little swimmer can be nerve-wracking.
Another Parent's Job: Your second toughest job will be trying to keep your younger swimmers relaxed between events because you don’t want them to burn out before it is time to swim. Make sure to bring something to do to pass the time between events such as cards, games like Apples to Apples, crafts, stuff for hair braiding, etc. Hanging out in the tents is usually one of the best parts of All-City.
One More Parent's Job: Shorewood is required to provide 33 volunteers to Clerk of Course and Timing during All-City swim. Please step up and volunteer--it is the best viewing in the house!
Big Buddies: There are big buddies for swimmers 8 & Under. These are older swimmers, who may come to cheer on their little buddy and bring a token gift. Often they stay and hang out with their little buddy for part of the day, but they are not obligated to do this, and many of them have summer jobs to get to. They are NOT BABYSITTERS. Big buddies are not responsible for getting your swimmer to Clerk of Course or keeping track of your swimmer between events.
