2018 Splash Weeks (Feb 26-Mar 9)

 2018 Splash Weeks Schedule (Feb 26 - Mar 9)

This year NEW 'team ready' swimmers and RETURNING swimmers whose primary practice location will be Redwood, will alternate practice days over the 2 weeks of "Splash".  Hot chocolate will be served to all during both weeks!  After Splash weeks we switch to our standard Practice Schedule.

What is the definition of NEW 'team ready'?  Good question!

  • 8 & Unders whose primary practice location will be Redwood, are considered NEW swimmers if they have not yet competed in a swim meet for Tidalwaves, but have been assessed as 'team ready' by Coach Marie.  If your child is a 'team ready' 8 and under swimmer whose primary practice location will be College of Marin, Kentfield, s/he does not attend Splash Weeks.  Practices at COM begin on February 27th.
  • All 9 year olds and above are considered 'team ready'.   They are considered NEW to Tidalwaves if they have not competed in a swim meet for Tidalwaves.  All 9 year olds and above attend Splash Weeks.
  • If your 8 & Under swimmer has not yet been assessed as 'team ready', please register him or her for a $5 assessment and attend one of the early assessment dates.  Click here for dates and schedule
    • If your child is assessed as 'tadpole ready' practices begin on February 27th at COM.  No Splash Week required.
    • If your child is assessed as 'team ready', and will primarily practice at COM, practice begins at COM on February 27th.  No Splash Week required.
    • If your child is assessed as 'team ready' and will primarily practice at Redwood, please have your child attend Splash Week practices as a NEW swimmer as shown in the tables below.

Why "Splash Weeks"?

Splash Weeks are used to determine practice groupings at Redwood. At Redwood there is a differentiation of "Blue" and/or "Gold" swimmers for each age grouping.  The coaches assess many factors in determining which practice group a swimmer is best suited for.  In general the emphasis is on technique, experience, age, and commitment-- not necessarily speed.

The reason there is no Splash Week required for COM swimmers is because all COM 8 & Under swimmers are considered "Blue" and represent kids in their first or second season of team swimming.

**"Team Ready Assessment" time for NEW 8 & Unders is available during Splash Week if your swimmer cannot attend the February 4th, February 13th, or February 15th assessments.  However, we strongly encourage attendance at these earlier dates.  Even if your child cannot make the early assessment date, please choose "New 8 & Under Assessment" during registration anyway.  Anyone who registers to this group will have an opportunity to sign up for a 20 minute assessment time slot via Sign Up Genius.  You will be contacted and your registration will be completed after your child has been assessed as either ready for tadpoles or the team.

Answers to Popular Questions

If your child is a NEW 8 & Under, but is a "Tadpole Graduate," please check with Coach Marie directly on whether she would like to do a "Team Ready" assessment of your tadpole graduate before you register.  Mariemcswim@yahoo.com.

For determining your child's age, we use the date of our first dual meet, so age as of May 5th for the 2018 season.

Your NEW 8 & Under swimmer's practice location is for you to choose.  COM is ideal for novice swimmers in their first or second year of swim team experience and who can make the earlier practice time.  Redwood will have both first and second year novice swimmers as well as more advanced 8 & Unders and practice starts later.  Of course they can go to either, but it is best for everyone (especially your swimmer) if you can try to stay consistent.

  • Practices for 'team level' swimmers are offered at College of Marin from 3:00 - 3:30 pm Tu, Th, FriIdeal for Bacich K-2nd graders.  And, yes, they will have the option to attend practice at Redwood as well--but it is better for everyone, including your child if you try to make all practices at one location.
  • Practice is offered at Redwood from 5:30 - 6:00 pm on Monday - Friday for our most novice 8 & Unders and from 5:30 - 6:15 for our more advanced 8 & Unders.
  • Tadpoles is offered ONLY at College of Marin from 2:30 - 3:00 pm on T, TH, F.  We regret we do not have enough pool space to offer this program at a later time or at Redwood.
