How old does my child have to be to start with Tidalwaves?

Tidalwaves is generally open to children ages 5-18.  However, there are some children who are ready to join the team at age 4, and others who are better off starting at age 6, 7, or 8.  Coach Marie looks at age, comfort in the water, ability to swim 25 yards of freestyle (it doesn’t have to be pretty!) with side breathing, and ability to follow instructions in determining if a child is ready for the team.  ALL NEW 8 & Unders must register for an assessment before we can complete registration onto the team.  Assessments are $5.

Because Tidalwaves offers practice for our New 8 & Unders at both College of Marin, Kentfield and at Redwood, we will be assessing these two groups of swimmers separately, as shown in the chart below:

**"Team Ready Assessment" time for NEW 8 & Unders is available during Splash Week if your swimmer cannot attend the February 4th, February 13th, or February 15th assessments.  However, we strongly encourage attendance at these earlier dates.  Even if your child cannot make the early assessment date, please choose "New 8 & Under Assessment" during registration anyway.  Anyone who registers to this group will have an opportunity to sign up for a 20 minute assessment time slot via Sign Up Genius.  You will be contacted and your registration will be completed after your child has been assessed as either ready for tadpoles or the team.

What if my child can not make the Assessment Date/Time?

Please register for the Assessment Group anyway, and then contact coach Marie (mariemcswim@yahoo.com).  There will be assessment opportunities during Splash Weeks (February 26 - March 9), however swimmers who come to the earlier assessment dates will have priority if we reach our maximum number of swimmers.

My child does not swim very well.  Can he/she still join the team? (How will I know if he/she is ready?)

Tidalwaves is open to children of all abilities. It doesn’t have to be pretty to start...  Swimmers rarely perfect their stroke before joining a team (and once on a team they will spend years and years improving their form—even the Olympians work on form).  One of the greatest benefits of being a part of a swim team and competing at whatever level your swimmer is ready for is the goal of improving the stroke to achieve a faster time.  Without the clock, swimmers have a hard time understanding the impact of technique changes and the importance of making these changes.  Competition and times help provide a reason to improve…

However, in the case of the NEW younger swimmers (ages 4-8), Coach Marie can and will assess if they are ready to join the team.  She will look at a variety of factors including; age, ability to follow instructions and ability to swim 25 yards of freestyle to determine if a child is ready for the team.   To register for an assessment, once registration opens, please select either "COM Assessment Group" or "Redwood Assessment Group".  There is a $5.00 fee for the assessment.  In the event that your child is assessed as "ready" for the team, we will move your child into the 8 & Under group and apply the assessment fee toward the registration fee.  In the event that your child is assessed as "not yet ready", you will be advised of our tadpole program which is run at College of Marin from 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for 2018.  We recognize that this time may not work for many families, but the tadpole program is not required.  If it cannot work for your child we recommend seeking private or group lessons at the location of your choice.

What is the Tadpole program?

The tadpole program is for children ages 4-7.  These younger swimmers practice separately from the team.  They do not swim in meets. The Tadpoles program is meant to be a training ground for the swim team.  It focuses on proper body position, balance, arm stroke, kicking and side breathing.

The Tadpole program is offered at College of Marin - Kentfield.  The season dates are:

February 27, 2018 - June 10, 2018  at College of Marin, Kentfield Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:30 - 3:00 pm

*Please note that there are qualifications for the tadpole program.  These are:

Child must be...

  • Deep water safe
  • Able to swim 15 yards with some arm strokes
  • Able to join group activities unaided
  • Ready to learn new skills in a group setting

If you are interested in the tadpole program, but are unsure of if your child is qualified, please register for the "COM Assessment Group".  If after the assessment, Coach Marie determines that your child is not yet ready for the Tadpole program (that is, needs more lessons) she will advise you.  There is a $5.00 fee for the assessment.  If your child is assessed as 'ready' for the Tadpole program the $5.00 fee will be applied toward your registration fee.  If you have more questions please contact coach Marie at mariemcswim@yahoo.com

If my child does Tadpoles and improves, can s/he try swimming in a meet at the conclusion of the season?

If Coach Marie feels that your swimmer is ready, he/she may join the Tidalwaves team mid- season at a reduced rate.  Parents would also need to contribute a prorated number of volunteer hours.

Can my child sign up for a month at a time instead of a whole season?

No. Tidalwaves and all the teams in the Marin Swim League are designed to be season long commitments for the swimmer, the family, and the team.
