Pool Depth Regs

Pool Depth Requirements

The Naperville Swim Conference follows the Illinois High School Association rules, which state the following water depth requirements when using starting blocks:

  • Starting blocks cannot be used if the water depth is less than 4 feet.

  • Swimmers must start in the water if the water depth is less than 4 feet.

If the pool has water depth of less than 4 feet at the starting block end, swimmers will start in the water in the pool.  At our pool, starting in the water will only affect the 2nd and 4th legs of the 8 and under relays.

As of 2016, overfilling a pool past the gutters in order to meet the 4 feet requirement is no longer allowed.
