Membership Update 5/17/20

Hello Old Orchard Families,

Thank you for your patience while we try to determine what the summer season at the pool might look like, and thank you to everyone who answered our survey. The information provided there continues to guide our decision making process.

While many of the most recent announcements, like the opening of parks and golf courses, from the Governor provide us some hope that a summer season might be possible, the closing of schools through the end of the year virtually assures that an opening prior to July 1 would be impossible. The fact is that there are still many unanswered questions, and we will be unable to provide definitive answers as to what the 2020 summer season will look like until some more details are given as to the rules that will govern the opening of pool clubs. .

Our club runs on a very thin profit margin. We run basically a break-even budget and any surplus goes to cover the off-season expenses and any capital improvements. Opening the club with significantly prorated membership fee or decrease in enrollment may not be fiscally responsible, and the long-term financial health of the club will drive the board’s decision making process when we are ultimately able to open the club.

Unfortunately, even if we stay closed, the carrying cost of not opening for the season exceeds our surplus from the 2019 season by approximately $10,000. As a result, we are hoping that some of you will be in a position to help. In the next few weeks, we will be distributing the bills for the 2020 summer season via email.  If your family has been negatively impacted by recent events, or you are in any way uncomfortable paying before knowing what this summer will ultimately hold, please feel free to hold the bill until we are able to provide more answers. There will be no carry-fee this year for bond-holders if you choose not to join this season.

However, if you are in a position to pay your bill this year, and are willing to do so, please consider paying for this summer’s season. For those who decide to pay one of several possible outcomes will happen:

  • ●    We open for the 2020 season with enough of the season intact that we are able to charge full rate.
    •     In this case you will enjoy the summer season as normal.
  • ●    We will open for a significantly shortened 2020 season with a prorated membership fee.
    •     Families who have paid the full price for membership will have the difference between the membership costs applied to the 2021 season.
  • ●    We will be ultimately unable to open for the 2020 season.
    •     Families who have paid for the 2020 season will have the full value of that payment applied to the 2021 season.

In addition, regardless of whether you decide to ultimately pay your bill for the 2020 season, we will be accepting donations on behalf of the club. Members who pay will find the opportunity to make an additional donation via team unify. If you have decided not to pay your membership, but are in a position to make a donation, please contact our treasurer, Michele Perez, at [email protected]

We recognize that our request for payment prior to knowing the details of the summer is atypical, and it asks a lot of our members in times that are incredibly challenging. We hope that some of you will find room in your budgets to support the club. It is the home for so many of our favorite summer memories and certainly worth preserving for many summers to come.

We will be reaching out with more information about the summer as soon as we have a clear picture of what it will look like. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Stay Well
