WHAT WOULD COACH BUD SAY? 

In The State Of Mind 

If you think you are beaten, you are; If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost; 

If you think you dare not, you don’t, For out in the world you find 

If you want to win, but think you can’t, Success begins with a fellow’s will; 

It’s almost a cinch you won’t. It’s all in the state of mind. 

Life’s battles don’t always go 

To the stronger and faster man; 

But sooner or later the man who wins 

Is the man who thinks he can. 

To all LPD Swimmers, 

One of our goals is a "winning mind." Here are a few things to focus on. 
Remember we burned “can’t” earlier this year so all your “can’t” thoughts are behind you leaving only positive thoughts. It’s “can do” and will do all the way. Your mind set needs to be focused on the only thing you control. The only thing you can control is you. Before you swim keep your thought from how hot it is, the lane you are in, the size of the swimmer next to you and all the other things you can’t do anything about. During the race keep your mind positive and in your lane, knowing it will be your best race ever. 

Trust and let it happen. Trust your training and hard work and let that great swim come out. You know you are “better today than yesterday”. Your best race ever is about to happen and you are having fun. In swimming terms, fun (passion) equals speed. The more fun you’re having before you swim, the faster you’ll go. Fun is one of the key passwords that will make you “better today than yesterday” and when you are “better today than yesterday” you are a winner. When you’re having fun, your body is relaxed and the accompanying emotion will power you to a peak performance. Getting too serious before a race by making it too important will kill your enjoyment of the sport and slam the door to your best race ever. Having fun has been one of our team goals for the past 4 years. A positive mind is a fun mind, the mind of a champion.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from Henry Ford:

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t your right”. You get what you expect. Those who expect the worst almost always get the worst. If you expect the best the best is what you will get. The mind controls the body. Remember, performance is self-fulfilling….. 

You get what you expect. So, with a positive mind set expect the best from your self, trust in your ability (you have had the best training available), have fun and let it happen.
