2018 Invitationals Cheat Sheet

Invitationals, VSA, Last Chance & County

  • If your child swims at an invitational or at VSA, you are required to work a job at each meet you attend (this is not included in your regular season job requirement).
  • New for 2018: Working at Last Chance does count towards your meet job requirement. All HOX families are strongly encouraged to work at this meet, even if you don’t have a child swimming.
  • Please go through the season’s meet schedule and attend or decline your swimmer(s) for each invitational, VSA and County. Even if you don’t think your child will be selected, please still go through the process. The coaches need to know exactly who is available to swim and who is not available. Do not get hung up on A, B, C swimmers, etc. Each invitational has different rules that dictate who swims. You really never know. If you can attend the meet and are willing to do a job, opt in! If you can’t, opt out.
  • All of the below meets (except VSA) have costs associated with them. The costs are the swimmer’s responsibility and will be billed to your member account.

7/15  Springbrook Pentathlon

  • The 5 top boy and 5 top girl swimmers from each age group will be selected to swim.
  • Each swimmer will swim all 5 strokes (6& Unders will swim 4 strokes because they do not swim IM).
  • No relays

7/19  VSA Summer Splash

  • An opportunity for developing swimmers to compete with like-skilled swimmers from around the VSA.
  • Summer Splash is known as a ‘B Meet.’ There is a B Standard Time for each stroke to qualify to swim in this meet. You can’t have a faster seed time than the B Standard Time.
  • While swimmers are eligible to swim up to 4 events at this meet, there are time standards set for each stroke. If your swimmer has a time that is faster than the maximum allowable time for a particular stroke, he or she will not be able to swim that stroke at this meet. This helps to keep the meet fun and competitive.

7/20-21 Crossings Challenge

  • Please note that this is a Friday and Saturday.
  • Crossings is known as a ‘B Meet.’ There is a B Standard Time for each stroke to qualify to swim in this meet. You can’t have a faster seed time than the B Standard Time.
  • A swimmer must qualify in more than 1 event to go.
  • A swimmer will swim a maximum of 3 events plus relays.

7/21-22 Woodlands Invitational

  • HOX can enter up to 5 top swimmers per event. Each swimmer can only swim 2 events plus relays.
  • There’s a slim chance a swimmer might be asked to swim relays only.
  • There is a trials/finals format. Trials are swum in the mornings, finals in the afternoons. If your child does not qualify for finals you don’t stay past the morning.

7/28-29 VSA League Championship

  • This is not an invitational – anyone who swims in three (3) VSA dual meets (**) is eligible to participate.
  • There is a trials/finals format. Trials are swum in the mornings, finals in the afternoons. If your child does not qualify for finals you do not stay past the morning.
  • Each swimmer can swim no more than 3 events plus relays.

8/1  Last Chance Meet

  • This is a fundraiser put on by our very own HOX.
  • It is the only meet on this list that counts towards fulfilling your meet job requirement. All families are strongly encouraged to work at this meet.
  • However, coaches are not coaching the way they usually do during a HOX meet. It’s even more of the parent and/or swimmer’s responsibility to get to races.
  • It’s an incredibly busy meet as swimmers from all over the county come to swim for ‘one last chance.’
  • Your swimmer can swim any/all strokes.
  • All swimmers welcome. For many, it’s a fun way to end the season and see improvement since Time Trials. It can be a good opportunity to swim an event you haven’t swam a lot during the season.

8/10-12 LMYA Invitational (aka County)

  • Swimmers eligible for this meet have swum a ‘County Time’ in at least 1 stroke. 2018 County times can be found here.
  • There is a trials/finals format. Trials are swum in the mornings, finals in the afternoons. If your child does not qualify for finals you don’t stay past the morning.
  • Each swimmer can swim a maximum of 2 events plus relays. If you get a County Time in 1 stroke, you swim that event only. If you get a County Time in 2 strokes, you swim those 2 events only. If you get a County Time in 3 or more strokes, you choose your best 2 strokes and swim those.
  • Relay trials only will take place on Friday evening, 8/10. Relay finals will be on Saturday and Sunday.
