Meet the Blue Sharks Coaching Staff
Mike Kremer is the founder and head coach of the Carroll Aquatics Swim Club (CASC) swim team. CASC (formerly Four Seasons Swim Club, FSSC) began in 2006 and is a member of the Central Maryland Swim League (CMSL). Mike began coaching in 1984 while attending graduate school. His swimming experience began at age 5 and continued through college, swimming 4 years at Dartmouth College, where he was co-captain his senior year. While at Dartmouth, he set several school records and qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships. Mike was an assistant coach at RMSC (Rockville, MD) and MAC (Frederick, MD) before becoming head coach at Carroll County YMCA (CCY; Westminster, MD) in 1994. During his 12 years as coach at CCY Mike developed and grew the team from 30-40 swimmers to 145 swimmers with numerous YMCA National Qualifiers. In 2006 a new pool was built in Hampstead, MD and Mike formed the Carroll Aquatics Tiger Sharks (CATS, USA Swimming) and Carroll Aquatics Swim Club (CASC, AAU) swim teams. In 2013 the Four Seasons pool returned to summer-only operations and Mike began coaching at Merritt Athletic Clubs in Eldersburg. In Mike’s years at CATS and Merritt, many swimmers have qualified for State, Sectional, Junior National (NCSA), and Futures swim meets. At Carroll Aquatics (CASC) the team has competed in various CMSL Divisions, has been Division champion, and has had several swimmers as individual and relay event champions at the Straehle Championship meet. Mike was also a member of the CMSL Board for many years and served as its president from 2013-2016.
Mike received his bachelor’s and master’s in engineering from Dartmouth College before working for 9 years with IBM. In 1993, Mike left IBM to open a State Farm Insurance Agency in Westminster where he continues to provide life planning, insurance, and financial services for clients.
Paige Berman is senior nursing student at the University of Maryland School of Nursing at Baltimore. She started competitive swimming at age 8, continued through high school, and swam for the club team at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her favorite stroke is Butterfly. In middle school and high school she swam for the Blue Sharks and is now in her third season as a coach. Her favorite part about coaching is getting to watch all of the swimmers create and reach their goals. In her free time, you can find Paige working in the ER at Union Memorial, hiking, swimming, or reading. In the future, she would love to continue coaching and become a Nurse Practitioner or a Doctor. She is looking forward to a wonderful summer with the Blue Sharks!
Sydney Laughlin is a recent high school graduate and is returning for her fourth year as a Blue Sharks coach. She is a year-round swimmer who has swam for Coach Mike for 6 years at Merritt Clubs in Eldersburg, where she also teaches lessons and lifeguards. In the fall she will be will be attending Grove City College, majoring in exercise science, and continuing her swimming career at the collegiate level. She can’t wait to see what this summer holds and how each swimmer preforms.
Francesca Cuchna is a rising senior at Manchester Valley High School who plans to continue swimming in college. She has been a year-round and Blue Sharks swimmer for the past 9 years and is entering her second season of coaching. She also lifeguards and teaches swim lessons at 4 Seasons. Francesca believes in always having fun both in and out of the pool. She has made some great friendships through swimming and her team is like a second family. She is a passionate swimmer and coach.
