Welcome to the 2019 Swim Season!
We are eagerly looking forward to meeting our newest team members as well as spending another summer with our fabulous returning teammates. We are hoping that this season will be the most exciting yet! The Ashley Plantation Stingrays Swim Team has been competing in a local summer swim league for over 10+ years. Over the years we have been very fortunate to have very dedicated and supportive swimmers, volunteers and coaches.
A successful swim team season consists of both time and dedication from parents, pool staff, and of course our dedicated coaching team. Although it may be difficult to find the time for everything, we must always keep in mind that we all must work together to create the most excellent Stingray Swim season for our children.
We would like to thank in advance all of our volunteers that are willing to offer their expertise and donate their time. We absolutely would not be the Stingrays without you and appreciate everything you do to help us throughout the whole season.

Ashley Plantation Stingrays Swim Team: (540) 404-2025
The Ashley Plantation Stingrays Swim Team is open to all Ashley Plantation pool members between the ages of 3 and up. Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool unassisted to compete in a swim meet. If you are unsure whether your child meets the requirements for the Stingrays, please speak to either of the coaches or board members. We do have Tune-Ups prior to the season they may utilize, or we can discuss swim lessons.

Registration and Fees
Registration is now open on our Team Unify website. Registration fees this year will be $95, per swimmer. RVAA fee of $25, prior to May 28th, $30 thereafter. You must be a member of the Ashley Plantation Pool. Membership prices vary. There is a 5% discount prior to April 5th. This does not include the Swim Team Only membership. Swim Team suits must be purchased separately.

Swim Team Suits and Equipment
Team suits and caps are not required for swim meets but are encouraged. The suit for the 2019 season is Dolfin from Pannell Swim Shop and can be purchased during the open house starting on March 24th. This is also available at Tune Up dates. These are the same suits as last year! Girls must wear a one-piece suit. Goggles and swim caps are highly recommended. All swimmers will receive a team t-shirt with registration. Swim caps are available for purchase for $12. In order to receive your swim suit prior to the first meet, deadline to order is May 1st!
Our practice schedule is designed to give each swimmer the appropriate training and instruction they may need or desire. Every child should begin the practice season with his/her age group. Coaches may change your practice time depending on your swimmer’s ability and pool space.

Good Sportsmanship and Team Spirit is a Must
Summer swim team is designed to be first and foremost FUN, while yes, the meets are competitive; the emphasis is definitely not on winning. Please encourage your swimmer to demonstrate good sportsmanship to swimmers, coaches and parents regardless of which team they are on.
The Stingrays have been known for years for their TEAM SPIRIT and this year should be no different. Cheering for our teammates, assisting younger swimmers, and displaying your Stingrays’ pride are just examples of our team unity. Keep your cheers loud, proud and friendly, be sure to congratulate all swimmers for doing their best and we will continue to make the Stingrays the team to beat in TEAM SPIRIT!!
Swim Meets and Competition
There will be a warm-up before each meet. The home team warms up from 5:00-5:30 PM. The visiting team warms up from 5:30-6:00 PM. The meets begin promptly at 6:00 PM. We ask that all swimmers arrive at 4:45 PM for home meets and 5:00 PM for away meets so they can be checked in properly and prepared for warm-ups on time.
When swimmers arrive at a meet, they have four basic responsibilities:
- Let the coach know they are there
- Check the posted line-up to see what events they are swimming. It is recommended that either a parent or older swimmer write their line-up information (event #, heat # and lane #) on the swimmers’ arm. Heat sheets are sent out via email prior to each meet. Please review ahead of time to insure your swimmer is registered correctly.
- Repost and line-up problems (such as being entered in too few or too many events) to one of the coaches.
- Report for warm-ups on time.
Each meet is broken up and will consist of individual events such as; freestyle, breaststroke, individual medley, backstroke and butterfly. Swimmer events are separated by gender into the following age groups; 6 and under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-24, 25-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, & 70+. 8 and under swimmers do not compete in the individual medley and 6 and under swimmers only compete in freestyle, backstroke and the freestyle relay.
Relays will be set prior to the meet. If a swimmer is not able to remain for the entire meet it is important that they check in with the coach prior to leaving. Swimmers tend to get very excited to be in a relay; coaches need to be sure that all of their relays are complete before disappointing other swimmers.
Swim meets are officiated according to RVAA rules and regulations. The Starter, Stroke and Turn Officials and Meet Official all work together to evaluate swimmers. Swimmers may be disqualified in a race for either executing an illegal start, turn or failure to preform proper stroke mechanics. The Officials may also disqualify any swimmer for poor sportsmanship and conduct. While it is unfortunate that swimmers are sometimes disqualified from a race, please address your concerns or grievances through the coach. It is very important that we all treat the officials with respect and courtesy.

Awards and Ribbons
Ribbons are awarded to swimmers who were not disqualified that place 1st, 2nd or 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th according to RVAA during regular season meets. The Ashley Plantation Stingrays Swim team appreciate all of their swimmers and understand it is difficult for the younger swimmers to walk away without any ribbons. Awards and gifts will be given at the end of the season party.
Parents are an important component of our team; we ask that you be involved at multiple levels. It is very important that swimmers and their families commit to practices, meets and always maintain a high level of sportsmanship and conduct at all times.
It is extremely important that all families volunteer in order for us to have a successful season. There are plenty of opportunities for parents and family members to contribute to the Stingrays Swim Team. All job sign-ups are on the website. Due to the size of our team, we require a volunteer from each family to complete at least 3 volunteer jobs for the season. This does not include completing a volunteer shift at the City/County swim meet at the end of the season. With your cooperation this allows us to make this season a fun and rewarding experience for all our children. We need you; please pitch in!!!
What can I do to help?
One of the most important parts of the Ashley Plantation Stingrays Swim team is the volunteer. There are many ways you can help out the Stingrays. We know that swim meets can be very hectic especially if you have smaller children. We are more than happy to work with you to find something that fits your family’s needs.
Timer: arrive by 5:45, report as called by meet announcer. Your shift will consist of timing each individual heat, recording times on event cards, and handing off event cards to runners. You will be paired with another timer, working in groups of two.
Runner: arrive by 5:45, report as called by meet announcer. Your shift will consist of collecting event cards from timers and "running" them to the table workers at the meets. You may also be called upon to take event cards from the table workers to the clerk of course area.
Merchandise sales: (home meets only) arrive at 5:30 and set up table next to concession area; you will get the merchandise from the supply closet, along with a price list. Your shift runs until 8pm. Clerk of course: Report by 5:30 for home and 5:45 at away meets. At each meet, a Head Clerk will run this area. For home meets, the clerk of course area is located on the right side of the pool at the tent area. During the meets (home and away) you will be responsible for verifying names on event sheet and directing swimmers to the appropriate "on deck" location behind the blocks.
Table workers: Report by 5:30pm for home meets and 5:45 for away meets; your job will consist of helping arrange and distribute event cards, as well as calculating combined times and recording the averaged time. You will need to be comfortable using a calculator and averaging times for this job. Table workers also help sort event cards and label and sort ribbons for both teams. You will be working with the Head Table Worker and computer operator.
Social Events: Organize fun activities or events for the swimmers throughout the season. We are looking for some new ideas and events to make this season the best yet.
Set-up and Break down: (at home meets only) report by 4:00pm. if you are part of the set-up shift. You will need to get items for set up from the supply closet in the bathrooms and the deck box. Set up includes setting up wooden posts and rope around the pool, put starting blocks in, moving the lane lines to the pool, setting up tables and supplies for the meet announcer and referee, setting up the swimmer chairs behind the blocks, and setting up the tent for the clerk of course area. The break down requires that you stay until the end of the meet and return all these items to the closets and deck box, as well as making sure the pool area is returned to good condition for the next day. These are essential jobs! There is a setup notebook is located in the bathroom closet to use as a reference.
Volunteer Jobs which require special training: Judges, Meet Referee, Starter, Head Table Worker.
