Intermediate Teams

Intermediate Synchro Stars

The intermediate team is the perfect introduction to competitive synchronized swimming. The girls spend the fall learning basic skills and the winter combining those skills into two routines. In the spring they attend four competitions. Increasing confidence and teamwork and having fun are the major goals  of this program.

Practice Commitment: 3 days per week

Prerequisites: For strong swimmers. Coach evaluation required.

* Please note that your child's age-group is determined by FINA Rules and is the age she will be on December 31, 2021. This is because we are preparing for the 2021 competitive season. Thus, it is possible that a girl who is 9 at registration time in August 2020 will sign up for the 11/12 intermediate team if she has a late birthday (September-December).

12-Week Trial of the Intermediate Team: (September - November)

In the fall, a 12-week trial of the intermediate team is available to swimmers who would like to try the program before committing to a full year. Participants attend all intermediate team practices but pay only for the first 12 weeks. At the end of the 12-week trial, they may elect to join the intermediate team for a pro-rated fee.

Practice Commitment: 3 days per week

Prerequisites: For strong swimmers. Coach evaluation required.  Fish Class.

Fish Class (ages 5-10)  This program teaches synchro skills in a non-competitive environment.  The athletes will learn basic synchronized swimming skills, an introduction to flexibility training, and enjoy new ways to move in the water with friends.  Both beginners and individuals with some synchro class experience will enjoy this program.  This class runs in the Fall, Winter and Spring sessions.

Practice Commitment: 1 day per week

Prerequisites:  For strong swimmers as practice will be in deep water.

Registration opens to new program participants in September 2020, on a first come, first served basis. Most of our new swimmers begin in the 12-week Trial or Fall Session Fish Class, but some are placed directly on the intermediate team. Girls with previous synchro experience (e.g. at a summer club) or an extensive background in competitive swimming, dance, gymnastics or diving are more likely to go straight onto the intermediate team. Girls who are 11 and older are also likely to go directly into intermediate, as their increased maturity allows them to learn new skills faster than younger beginners.

If your daughter is considering joining the New Canaan YMCA Aquianas and would like to be considered for the intermediate team, please contact Krista Karwosky ([email protected]) to schedule a free trial class/evaluation.
