The first Pan American Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1951 where more than 2,500 athletes competed from 22 countries. The organization that governs the games is the Pan American Sport Organization PASO (PASO). Today the organization is comprised of 42 nations of North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
The Games are held every four years and the programme includes those sports, disciplines and events contained in the official programme of the Olympic Summer Games to be held a year after the Pan American Games. However, it may also include a determined number of non-Olympic sports duly recognized by PASO.
Guadalajara, Mexico hosted the last Games in 2011 and had over 6000 participating athletes. This Games was to mark a truly momentous event in the history of Cayman Swimming when Brett Fraser took Cayman’s very first Pan American Games gold medal with his brother Shaune finishing just behind him to secure the silver in the 200m Freestyle event.
