Telluride Nordic Ski Club

2019-2020 Program Information

Director:  Deanna Drew,

Greetings cross country skiers!!

The Telluride Nordic Ski Club is for recreational and competitive cross country skiers in grades 3-12.  Instruction will take place in both classic and skate techniques.  No experience is necessary.   Classic and skate cross country skiing equipment is available to borrow from the Club; inventory is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.  Kids should bring their own equipment, if possible.

The Nordic development program is for kids who have been cross-country skiing for a few seasons, or who are new to Nordic skiing.   Skiers will develop basic skills and fitness of both classic and skate techniques in a fun learning environment.  The club encourages kids from other sports to enroll so that athletes can maintain and improve their fitness throughout the winter months.  Participants will be introduced to racing and will have the option to compete in regional race events.

The Nordic race program will focus on improving the fundamental skills and fitness of both classic and skate ski techniques while preparing athletes of all ages for racing competition.  Skiers will work on physical conditioning activities and technical knowledge to advance skill and fitness levels in a fun environment.  The club will work with competitors in other sports to cross train during the winter months.  Athletes are encouraged, but not required, to train for and participate in regional USSA Junior Nordic and other race events.

3-Day Program:  Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from December 9 through March 5, after school until 5:15 pm, holiday break weeks included.   Additional race training sessions may be scheduled on weekends.

2-Day Program:  Tuesdays and Thursdays from December 10 through March 5, after school until 5:15, holiday break weeks included.

WHERE:  Immediately after school, skiers meet at the TSSC clubhouse at bottom of lift 7 (where equipment is stored) to suit up.  Group will then walk to Valley Floor or Town Park Nordic trails, or be shuttled to other local Nordic trails, for practice in groups divided by age and ability.  Kids will return to clubhouse for pickup no later than 5:30 pm.

COST:  $500 for 3-day program; $350 for 2-day program.   ** Cost does not include race events.  Financial aid is available, please email for application.

Wayne Clark, Nordic Head Coach

Wayne grew up racing in upstate New York at the state and national level, qualifying for Junior Nationals at Salt Lake City, Truckee, CA and Anchorage, Ak. After high school he attended the University of Wisconsin Green Bay where he skied and raced for the division 1 team. Once graduated, Wayne moved to Boulder, Colorado where he started coaching with the Boulder Nordic Junior Racing Team. After his first season he was named head coach of development where he stayed for the following four years. As head coach he was responsible for training plans, communication among coaches and parents, staying relevant with current training pedagogy, wax technician and establishing a life long love for skiing among his athletes. Join us on Sunday, January 20 at Telluride Town Park for the Telluride Nordic Ski Club's first annual cross-country skiathon!

From 10 am until 1 pm, members of the Nordic club will ski as many laps around Town Park as possible and obtain sponsors to donate money per kilometer skied.   Funds raised will go toward  jackets, hats and race tops/bottoms for the kids to ski and compete in, for years to come.

Members of the public are invited to come watch, cheer on, or ski with the athletes for all or part of the day, as they raise money for Telluride's new junior Nordic program.
