Tryout Information and Minimum Requirements for San Benito Aquatics

Who can join the San Benito Aquatics Swim Team?

Any children between the ages of 4 and 18 who have some swimming experience is welcome to tryout. If your child passes the tryout, and we're not at full capacity in the group they qualify for we are happy to have them join our team.

What can I expect during the tryout?

Our team tryouts are based upon the age of the swimmer and their swimming abilities. This brief tryout (about 10 minutes) will help the coach determine your child’s swimming ability. Upon completion a recommendation will be provided to the parent as to whether the child is ready to join our competitive swim team, or if he/she needs swim lessons prior to joining the team. Swimmers who pass this entry level tryout will be invited to join our entry level group.

The following list provides the minimum requirements that our coaches are looking for from a swimmer who wishes to join our team:

Dragonflies: The swimmer will be asked to swim two laps in the competition pool. One lap (25 yards) of freestyle and one lap of backstroke. The coach will observe them to see how well they know these two strokes and see if they can swim the length of the lane without stopping.

Sea Serpents: This is an advanced beginner level group and the swimmer will be expected to know all four major strokes (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle) legally. They will also be expected to know racing dives and flip turns. Children who can demonstrate these abilities during a tryout practice will be invited to join this group.

Water Dragons: In this intermediate/advanced group, the swimmer will be expected to know all for major strokes legally (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle), the swimmer may have some Pacific Swimming B times, and should be able to swim a 5 x 100 freestyle @ 1:40. Children who can demonstrate this during a tryout will be invited to join this group.

Hydras / Sea Dragons: Swimmers in these groups must have previous swim team experience, have Pacific Swimming A times or greater, and be able to swim an 8 x 100 @ 1:20. Kids who have these minimums will first be invited to meet with our coaching staff to discuss their previous swim experience. If they’ve not been absent from swimming for more than two months time, they will be invited to join one of these senior group practices to tryout for the team. After practice, the senior coach will determine if they are a good fit for our Hydra Group, or our Sea Dragon Group which they will be invited to join.

What are practice hours?

Practices vary from 3:30-6:45 PM Monday through Friday based on the group your swimmer will enter. We also may conduct morning practices during the summer and double practices during the winter break. After the tryout our swim coach will be able to give you exact times that your child will practice.
