Time Standards

Time Standards

Swimmers are classified as a WHITE, RED, or BLUE swimmer based on their times from swim meets. Swim meets are then categorized based on time standards. For a complete list of time standards in each event, go to the Souther California Swimming (SCS) website here, then scroll to "Time Standards, then select the appropriate age and gender for the swimmer.

Every swimmer starts off as a WHITE swimmer. Once they have achieved at least three (3) RED times in three (3) different strokes, they are classified as a RED swimmer. Once they have achieved at least three (3) BLUE times in three (3) different strokes, they are classified as a BLUE swimmer. Beyond BLUE time standards are Winter Age Group Champs (WAG), June Age Group Champs (JAG), and Summer/Spring Junior Olympics (JOs).

Meets are organized based on time standards. Most swimmers will be swimming in meets classified as RW, BRW, or Blue:

Red / White (RW):  Meets specifically for RED and WHITE swimmers. These meets are designed for beginners and those trying to achieve the next level time standards.

Blue / Red / White (BRW):  Meets are specifically for BLUE, RED, and WHITE swimmers. These meets are super fun since a majority of the team will go - beginners to advanced.

Blue:  Meets are specifically for BLUE swimmers or swimmers who have achieved a BLUE time. Any swimmer who has achieved at least 1 BLUE time may swim that event in this meet.

Junior Olympic Max (JO MAX):  These meets are specifically for swimmers who do not have a JO time standard. For the most part, they are basically another BRW meet, but it is classified as a "Championship" meet.

Summer / Spring Junior Olympics (JOs):  These meets are specifically for swimmers who have achieved at least one summer/spring JO time. Summer JOs is in July and Spring JOs is in March. JOs is classified as a "Championship" meet. There might be a situation where a swimmer does not qualify for these meets individually, but are put on a relay.

Winter / June Age Group (WAG/JAG): These meets are specifically for swimmers who have achieved at least one winter/June age group time. WAG is in December and JAG is in June. WAG and JAG are classified as "Championship" meets. There might be a situation where a swimmer does not qualify for these meets individually, but are put on a relay.
