Message from Board President

Santa Barbara Swim Club Families

Well it is high time I said hello to all the SBSC members and thank you for your continued support and commitment to SBSC.  The club turned over a new fiscal year on October 1st, so I thought this might be a grand time to share some of the goings on at the board level with you all.

At our “annual meeting” we rotate director positions, elect new board officers, review financials for the prior year, adopt a budget for the coming year, and have a dialog with team management leaders.  I would like to thank the parents who attended the meeting and brought forth questions; it was a nice town hall style discussion this year. Below I will provide some of the discussion points that were covered at the meeting.

Changes to the board:

First I want to thank Pam Nguyen and Elizabeth Boscacci for their years of dedication to SBSC.  We will continue to see both Pam and Liz on the deck at swim meets as they have both stepped into the service of meet administration.  Thank you both.

Next I would like to welcome three new board members:

  • Matt Struckmeyer – College counselor by day and Masters and ocean Swimmer by twilight.
  • Marci Steelman – She applies her analytical background during the day and member of “The Amazing Swim-A-Thon” organization committee last year.
  • Tara Rybnicek – Engineer by day, mother of three boys by morning, noon, and night.

Continuing board members and new officer positions:

  • Paul Castleberg (President)
  • Lance Depew (Vice President)
  • Sara Ellis (Treasurer)
  • Lucia Eickert (Secretary)
  • Tom Hopkins
  • Chris Roderick

WAG plea: Dec 8- 10, 2017 – SBSC hosts the Winter Age Group (WAG) Championship meet at Golden West City College in Huntington Beach.  This meet will have ~1200 swimmer from all across Southern California.

“Why the heck don’t we hold this meet in Santa Barbara every year?”  A great question, yet complex answer. It is a short course meet (25 yards) and traditionally this meet has been held in Los Angeles or Long Beach.  SBSC has to bid each year for the right to host this meet, and we view this as part of our fundraising endeavors.  To pull off a big meet, we really need your help!  If your swimmer is planning to attend, please be proactive and reach out to myself or Shawn May to ask how you can help.

Membership levels

As of October 1, 2017 the club had 561 registers swimmers in the following categories.

  • 206 Age group swimmers
    • 94 Turtles, Dolphins, and Sharks, 59 advance age group, 53 seniors
    • 166 at Los Banos and 40 at UCSB
  • 355 Masters (146 active fee paying and 209 registered with punch cards) (355 mailing list size)
