How Do I Join?

NEW SWIMMER EVALUATIONS (Spring 2013)

Joining ZAP is a very simple process. Once you have looked through our website and made sure our philosophy matches yours, you just need to do the following:

Step 1) Get evaluated by one of our coaches (Please see evaluation schedule below)

Step 2) Complete the ZAP online registration

Step 3) Complete USA Swimming registration form (hard copy; coach needs to see a birth certificate or passport)

Step 4) Pay the initial ZAP registration fee (includes USA Swimming reg. fee, ZAP shirt and cap.)

Step 5) Show your team spirt and purchase ZAP gear from The Swim Guy (and be sure to wear it to meets!)

When you arrive to the pool for your evaluation, please bring: a suit, a towel AND A BIRTH CERTIFICATE OR PASSPORT (for USA Swimming registration). Goggles and swim cap are optional (we do not provide these).

What is the minimum requirement to schedule an evaluation? At the very least, a swimmer needs to be able swim 25 yards of Freestyle and backstroke without assistance from a coach, parent/caregiver, sibling or the wall. The swimmer must also be able to separate from the parent/caregiver without issue and take direction independently; Parents may observe the evaluation from the bleachers, but not poolside.

How long will the evaluation last? Typically, the evaluation will last anywhere from 10-20 minutes, depending on what the swimmer knows. We also like to take a few minutes after the evaluation to talk with the parent(s) and answer any initial questions you may have.

How are swimmers placed? We divide the team into different training groups based upon age, practice and swim meet performance, demonstrated leadership skills, and desired level of commitment (See "Team Structure" drop down bar under "Swimmer Info". Since new swimmers have not had the opportunity to demonstrate practice and swim meet performance, or leadership skills, we do a short evaluation of their swim skills and ask a series of questions to make an initial placement. No swimmer is "married" to their initial placement and will move into the next group once he/she has demonstrated the promotion standards (listed under "Swimmer Info" on this website).

What does the initial non-refundable registration fee cover? The ZAP initial registration fee includes payment of the mandatory USA Swimming fee, as well as a ZAP shirt and swim cap. Fees also help us offset rental and service fees for our holiday parties, banquet, team and other events.

Once your swimmers begins practicing with ZAP it's time to:

1) Get their ZAP shirt and cap from their coach

2) Wear a competition style practice suit during practices

3) Bring all required practice equipment to practices

4) Purchase all your ZAP swag from The Swim Guy and show your ZAP team pride!
