  • Ideal Age: 5-8 years old

1. Swimmers should be able to exhale into the water and breathe to the side or back. 

2.  Float on back and show comfort on back.

3.  Reasonable freestyle for a 25.

4.  Kick on back or backstroke for a 25.

  • Swimmers will either attend the M/W option, the T/Th option, or the Friday option.

  1. 6 – 10 ½ yrs. Old
  2. Legally swim at least 3 of the 4 strokes, with an understanding of correct technique in the 4th.
  3. 50 free, 50 back, 25 fly, 25 breast, and 50 kick in all four strokes with reasonable speed.
  4. Ready position – drop under water and push off in streamline on front and back, with underwater kicking skills.
  5. Forward flip in water.
  6. Racing start progressions.
  7. Backstroke finish.
  8. Recommended that swimmers attend a minimum of 2 or 3, of the 5 one hour practices offered per week.
  9. Must pass a try-out period before official move-up.
  10. Coach retains the discretion to evaluate other factors such as age, maturity,

willingness to learn, ability to follow instructions, physical ability, and sportsmanship.

  1. Correct technique, starts, turns, and finishes will be covered for each stroke.  Basic clock skills will be covered.  Home, mini meets, and some travel meets recommended.  Year round swimming is offered.
Junior Development 1 Monday-Thursday 4:45-6:00 pm Short Course  
 
  1. While it is not a requirement to be able to swim all four strokes legally, swimmers should have a good understanding of each of the four strokes.
  2. Junior Development swimmers are offered between 4 practices each week and are encouraged to attend as many practices as they would like. There is not a minimum practice requirement to be in Junior Development.
  3. This group is intended for a variety of swimmers that range from those involved in other activities outside of the pool and are not able to meet practice requirements of other groups on the team, to having joined the sport late and is more interested in the exercise aspect of swimming instead of competition.
  4. Meets are encouraged, but not required.

  • Understanding of proper technique of starts and turns.
  • Hold streamline with dolphin kicks for two body lengths.
  • Complete a 100 IM with correct transitions.
  • Begin understanding and concept of interval training.
  • Continue to improve on reading a pace clock.
  • Recommended 3-4 of the 6 practices a week.
  • Home meets heavily recommended, and travel meets strongly encouraged.

  • Ideal age: 9-11 years old
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in all four strokes, as well as proficiency in all starts and turns. 
  • Able to demonstrate proficiency in training skills such as reading a pace clock, interval training, etc.
  • Aerobic training principles are developed.
  • Dry-land training is integrated into the daily practice schedule.
  • IMX swimming events are emphasized.
  • 3-5 times/ week recommended, 3 times/ week required
Blue Monday thru Friday 3:45-6:00 Short Course

  • Ideal age: 11-14 years old
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to train and compete at a high level.  Also able to demonstrate a high level of dedication to the sport of swimming.
  • Technique fine tuning is continued, with an emphasis on racing skills.
  • Advanced aerobic and anaerobic training principles are introduced. 
  • Advanced racing strategy is discussed and implemented. 
  • Advanced dry-land training concepts are introduced.
  • Proper nutrition and recovery concepts are introduced to the athlete.
  • USA swimming IMX events will be primary focus.
  • 4 practices per week required, with Saturday morning highly recommended.
Junior Monday-Friday 3:45-6:15 pm Short Course

  • Ideal Age: 13-15 years old
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to train and compete at a high level. 
  • Dedication to the sport is demanded of athletes in this group.
  • Seasonal training and racing plans are introduced.
  • Continued education on racing skills and advanced training concepts. 
  • Dry-land is heavily integrated. 
  • Proper nutrition and recovery techniques continue to be taught.
  • USA Swimming IMX events continue to be a focus, along with some stroke specialization.
Senior Monday-Friday 3:30-6:00 pm Short Course

Wednesday and Friday 5:00-6:45 am Weights & Swimming  
Saturday 6:00-9:00 am Long Course  
  • Ideal age: 14-18 years old
  • Able to demonstrate the ability to compete on a Regional and National level, and the ability to train to this level.
  • Seasonal and Quadrennial training plans are followed. 
  • Racing skills development continues. 
  • Weight training is integrated into the Dry-land program.
  • Proper Nutrition and recovery techniques are expected.
  • USA Swimming events are a base focus, with each athlete having some specialization in events.
  • 9 practices per week are offered, and swimmers are expected to attend each of those.
Masters
Monday thru Friday 5:00-7:00 am

  • Adults
  • A flexible program with workouts designed to meet the fitness goals of the individual swimmer.
  • Visiting Master Swimmers: Please bring your USMA card with you when you visit Huntsville and swim with HSA.

  • Able to swim a 25 of freestyle with side breathing and a 25 of backstroke
  • Able to demonstrate a basic of understanding of Breaststroke and Butterfly
  • Deep-water Safe
  • This group focuses on proper stroke technique in all four competitive strokes, as well as starts, turns, and finishes in each of the strokes.  The most basic training skills are also taught.
  • 2-3 times/ week recommended.

  • Basic skills, such as the ability to read a pace clock are also expected.
  • Proper stroke technique in all four strokes is worked on.
  • Aerobic and anaerobic training principles are developed.
  • Dry-land training is an integral part of group schedule.  High School and USA Swimming IMR events are emphasized.
  • Senior Development has no minimum practice requirement but we recommend that all swimmers in the group attend as many workouts as possible weekly.
