MTS Developmental Program

Tiger Sharks – The first step in the MTS program is the Tiger Sharks. This is an introductory group whose goals are to teach proper techniques and stroke mechanics in a fun and enjoyable atmosphere. The focus will be refining and perfecting freestyle and backstroke as well as learning fundamentals of butterfly and breaststroke.

Requirements for Entry into Tiger Sharks

Swimmers should be capable of swimming 25 yards freestyle with their face in the water and 25 yards of backstroke

Attendance

Practices are offered 4 days/week. Swimmers should attend 2-3 practices per week to see proper progression

Ages

Recommended 7 to 10 yr olds

Swim Meet Participation

Swimmers are recommended to swim in MTS hosted meets and other local meets

Goals for advancement

Consistently push off the wall in workout in streamline position


Push off the wall and streamline dolphin kick to 5 yards


Be able to receive coaching feedback and show willingness to make changes

Be able to execute a forward racing dive and backstroke start

Piranhas The Piranhas are an entry level training group aiming to teach swimmers advanced skills in all four strokes, starts, and turns. The primary focus of this group is to learn and understand drills, to develop proper stroke mechanics, and become proficient in the four competitive strokes. Piranhas focus on kicking, are introduced to aerobic training in the pool, as well as dryland strength, flexibility, and coordination work.

Requirements for Entry into Piranhas

  • 1x100 IM Legal and Continuous

  • 4x50 Free Swim on 1:30 (SCY)

  • 6x50 Free Kick on 1:40 (SCY)

Attendance

Practices are offered 5 days/week. Swimmers should attend 3-4 practices per week to see proper progression

Ages

Recommended 7 to 10 yr olds

Swim Meet Participation

Short Course: 3 meet minimum, End of Season Meet (Regions or Southeasterns) Highly Recommended!


Long Course: 2 meet minimum

Goals for advancement

Push off the wall and streamline dolphin kick to 10 yards 


Show knowledge of how to use pace clock and do a basic interval set 


Show proficiency in executing racing turns in all four strokes, including streamline 
and underwater kicking

 

MarlinsThis is a more advanced developmental training group aiming to build on the fundamentals taught in the earlier groups. Focusing on the dynamics of competitive swimming, this group continues to work on stroke development for each of the four strokes with an increasing emphasis on aerobic development. Drills are taught with an explanation on the function and goals they serve in terms of stroke development. Every Marlins practice focuses on a number of technical stroke points and works to refine these skills. Dryland exercises which promote strength, flexibility, and coordination will continue to be developed.

Requirements for Entry into Marlins

  • 2x100 IM Legal and Continuous on 2:30 (SCY)

  • 6x50 Free Swim on 1:10 (SCY)

  • 6x50 Free Kick on 1:20 (SCY)

Attendance

Practices are offered 5 days/week. Swimmers should attend 3-4 practices per week to see proper progression

Ages

Recommended 8 to 11 yr olds 


Swim Meet Participation

Goals for advancement

Streamline dolphin kick to 15 meters from both a push and a racing dive 


Consistently show ability to receive coaching feedback, make technical changes, and show an effort to improve
