Why swim with Tennessee Aquatics Masters?
Swimming is great exercise,
Our indoor heated pools are available year-round,
Swimming with others of your ability is fun, and
TNAQ Masters offers twelve weekly workouts to fit your schedule.
What's the membership of TNAQ Masters like?
We have over 60 adult swimmers, some are competitive swimmers, most swim for fitness, others for the friendly social atmosphere and for rehab from injuries. From students to retirees, the ages range from 20-80.
I'm not a very fast swimmer, can't swim all the strokes, and am not sure I can finish the whole workout; how good a swimmer must I be to join?
TNAQ Masters welcomes swimmers of all abilities. We have all abilities from ex-college swimmers to novice swimmers. If you can swim freestyle for 4 lengths of the pool, our coaching staff can help you improve your skills and endurance. You don't need to be able to swim all the strokes to join! Don't be afraid to ask for help. Our coaches can adjust the workout to meet the needs of each swimmer.
What are the workouts like? How many yards per workout?
Each workout runs for an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes (don't worry if you can't finish the whole workout initially). The coach gives the sets, which vary in distance. Workouts generally cover around 3,000 to 3,500 yards.
When are workouts available?
We hold 12 practices each week, morning, noon, and night. Find a time that works for you on our schedule.
Where are you located?
The Allan Jones Aquatic Center is located at the corner of Andy Holt Ave. and Volunteer Blvd (2200 Andy Holt Ave).
What's the water temperature?
The competition pool is usually a comfortable 78-80 degrees. The diving well is kept slightly warmer.
Are locker rooms and hot showers available?
Yes, Masters swimmers have access to the Visitor’s Locker rooms and showers.
I'm not in the best of shape now, and don't look so great in a swimsuit. Do I have to wear a racing swim suit?
You are not alone. We have all been there. Any swimsuit will do. At any given workout, all body types may represented! People aren't focused on your looks as much as you might be. Just hop in and get some exercise! If you put it off, you might never get going.
Are there races?
TNAQ hosts meets, which provides the opportunity for members to volunteer and compete. Our competition team also travels to regional meets as well as National and World events. Participation in competitive meets is optional but they are lots fun and give you the opportunity to try out your new skills.
Can I try a few trial swims before I sign up?
Sure, the first two weeks are free; just show up at the pool during practice times and tell the coach that you're there to check it out. Suits are mandatory. Goggles are recommended. Caps are optional.
What does it cost?
The monthly dues are $65 for regular membership, $55 for UT employees, and $25 for UT students. Discounts are given for members paying by the semester (4 month period). Swimmers may register with USMS if they want to compete in swim meets.
Those who are interested can check out TNAQ Masters by swimming a couple of workouts for free. Ask about the free swims at the pool.
