DART Training Philosophy

Training Group Philosophy

DART Swimming at Sacramento is dedicated to creating a program that allows swimmers to grow as athletes along-side their peers over the course of their swim career.  Our goal is to help our swimmers become well-rounded individuals who grow physically, emotionally, in sportsmanship and in confidence through the sport of swimming.

Our group progression is designed such that our swimmers are allowed to advance athletically and emotionally at a pace which is developmentally appropriate.  Swimmers are typically placed in groups based on their grade-levels, ie. social peers.  We believe that we are able to best serve our athlete’s long-term physical and emotional needs by way of this progressive advancement through the program.

We have created an in-depth description of the focus, goals and expectations for each training group that include training expectations, biomechanical skills, physiological development, cognitive knowledge, character development, and psychological/mental training, skills and awareness. These can be found on our website’s “Swim Group” drop-down menu.

Please also see "Recommended Attendance" by groups here.

In specific situations, however, we recognize that an athlete may be better served by an earlier progression at certain junctures of his/her swim career.  This is more of an exception than the norm.  The DART coaching staff will carefully consider each swimmer and help families assess what is best for their swimmer.  We have adopted an Early Progression Rubric and Evaluation process for this purpose.   Again, however, the need to consider the long-term athletic, social and emotional development of each swimmer and ensuring the "right fit" in training group placement cannot be over-emphasized.   In our experience, “fast” swimmers, especially younger swimmers, are still best served when training with their peers in their current group.   Swimming is a life-sport; it is also a process.  Excelling and maintaining the love for the sport is our Team's goal.

In summary, DART Swimming at Sacramento provides a place for the development of a life-long love of the sport of swimming through commitment, competition, and camaraderie.  We view our swimmers' learning process with a long-term horizon and strive to help our athletes develop skills in the water that will serve them outside of the pool as well.  In addition, the friendships and memories they make being part of DART at Sacramento team will hopefully last a lifetime.
