Sienna Sharks – FAQ

  1. What is the difference between Sharks and Stingrays?

Sharks and Stingrays are the two summer league swim teams in Sienna Plantation. Sharks participate in a league that is completely within Sienna, while Stingrays are in a league that includes teams from other neighborhoods.

  1. What is the age requirement to participate in SHARKS?

Swimmers must have turned 5 years old by August 31, 2017. No exceptions.

  1. My child has a birthday during the season, does she change practice groups?

A swimmer’s age at the start of the season on May 7th determines their age for practice groups and meets for the entire season. A swimmer who is 8 on May 7th and turns 9 on May 30th swims as an 8 year old all season.

  1. How much does it cost to participate?

Fees are $170 payable by check only and includes a seasonal USA Swimming membership, a swim cap and a t-shirt.

  1. What skill level is required of new swimmers?

All swimmers participating in SHARKS must be able to swim the length of the pool, 25 yards, without stopping. All new swimmers will be required to participate in a SHARKS evaluation, which will be held on multiple dates in April. Swimmers who were on Sharks last year do not need to complete an evaluation.

  1. What equipment/apparel are swimmers required to have?

It is required that all swimmers have a team suit, kickboard, fins and goggles. SHARKS will provide each swimmer with a team shirt and swim cap. All suits/equipment can be purchased from Swim Shops of the Southwest in Pearland. Cost of the team suits are $60 for girls and $40 for boys. Swim Shops of the Southwest will be at Club Sienna on April 26th from 4:30-8:00 pm or you can go to the shop in Pearland. This is the 2nd year of a two-year suit. Swimmers who have a suit that still fits from last year do not have to purchase a new suit.

  1. How are the teams divided?

The SHARKS coaches divide the teams into 4 teams based on age and gender, not ability.   For example, all the 7-year old boys are divided among the 4 teams. Siblings are always placed on the same teams.

  1. When do the swim meets take place?

The swim meets take place on Saturday mornings, beginning with warm up at 7am and one Thursday beginning with warm up at 4:30 pm. 2018 meet dates are May 26,
June 2, 9, 16, 21, 23. All meets start one hour after the start of warm up.

  1. How long does each meet last?

The swim meets last approximately 2 hours.

  1. Will I be required to volunteer at the meets?

Parent volunteers are required in order to run the meets. There are lots of ways to help at the meets including set up/tear down, timing, and gathering swimmers. A Sign-Up Genius email will be sent the week before each meet to allow you to sign up for a volunteer position.

  1. Once school is out, I see that my child’s age group is scheduled to practice every day of the week. Is there an attendance requirement?

There is not an attendance requirement. Swimmers are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible to get the full Sharks experience.

  1. How will I know if practice is cancelled for any reason?

Sharks will use the Remind App for practice notifications. To join the group, text @sharksal to 81010.

  1. How can I watch practice if I am not allowed on the pool deck?

You are allowed to watch practices from the patio at Club Sienna. Parents must enter the patio from the Club building. Only registered members of USA Swimming are allowed on deck during any team practice. Keeping a safe deck environment for all swimmers and coaches is our number one priority.

  1. Why is my child registered with USA Swimming?

Sienna Sharks is part of Sienna Plantation Aquatics, a USA Swimming registered team. All team members are required to be athlete members of USA Swimming. This membership brings many benefits, including insurance coverage, guarantees of certified coaches leading all teams, SPLASH magazine subscription and many more.
