Formula Endurance FAQ’s

Junior triathlon teams are one the biggest aspects of growing sport, and are a new concept to many. These FAQ's should help explain more about our program.

What is Formula Endurance?

Formula Endurance is the ONLY high performance triathlon team in San Diego. With the NCAA set to introduce women's triathlon and scholarship opportunities, it is important that athletes with the aptitude for multi-sport explore all opportunities. Formula Endurance focuses on preparing its athletes for all aspects of triathlon. We don't restrict athletes, we support them.

Formula Endurance is a 501c3 organization committed to promoting and developing the sports of triathlon among youth, teenagers, collegiate and post-collegiate athletes in a team atmosphere, from beginner to elite ability levels. Athletes in the program will build skills and learn goal setting and pursuing goals. With hard work and fun, athletes will build a healthy lifestyle from their experiences in this positive environment for personal growth both in the sport, and in life. Formula will also support certain athletes displaying a desire and potential ability to compete at the highest level of the sport for their age, with a more focused and determined training regimen and development protocol toward the highest levels of sport.

What age does my child have to be to participate?

Your child can be 6-19, or even collegiate, to be a part of the program. Their age is determined by their age on December 31 of this year.

Who is the head coach?

Jim Vance is the head coach of the team. Jim has been an elite triathlete, and is a level 2 USA Triathlon Certified Coach, and an Elite Coach for TrainingBible Coaching. Jim is also a two-time amateur world champion in triathlon, for XTERRA and ITU. He has also seen success at the Ironman level, with multiple top 8 finishes, including 3rd at Ironman Florida in 2006, in a time of 8:37:09. Jim is a former school teacher, who holds a BS in physical education, and using his background in teaching to be an exceptional coach.

How long is the Formula season? What is their race schedule?

The Formula Endurance season is year round, with practices offered weekly. Race schedule varies with the seasons.

How often do they practice? What time are the practices held?

It depends on youth or junior program, but there are many opportunities. We practice multiple times per week in and around Mission Bay.

What if my child can not attend some of the sessions?

Though attendance will be highly encouraged, it is not mandatory. Athletes who attend practice regularly are the ones who improve the most, without question.

How much does it cost to have my child participate?

The monthly membership fees depend on the program that fits best for your athlete.  See our ABOUT "Program Options" for more details.

We live too far away to take advantage of all the practices, what options do you offer for that?

For athletes interested in Competing Nationally, we offer a Satellite Program.  See ABOUT "Program Options."

What sorts of equipment does my child need to participate? What can Formula provide, if my child doesn’t have a bike, or other needs?

Athletes in the triathlon program can be offered a bike, helmet and wetsuit, if they need it, for a small annual lease. Athletes in the triathlon program will need a road bike, helmet, wetsuit, and running shoes, at a minimum. Training apparel, such as bike shorts, swim suits, and other items are highly recommended. Formula has delivered FREE gear and apparel averaging nearly $1000 per family, PER YEAR! How do we do this? We get donations from companies and individuals, and we give these items to the athletes.

Will sponsors be providing anything for my kids?

Sponsorships items vary greatly, and are based on timing, as well as the number of kids on the team. Sponsorship for 10 kids on the team is much easier to obtain than for 40 kids. Formula also has a point system to help determine which athletes get sponsorship items first, based on attendance at practice, logging of workouts, and race performances. This allows for any and all sponsorships to be objectively and fairly distributed to the team.

Where do I register my child for the team?

You can register your child, under JOIN.

What can I do to help the program? Where can I find out more information?

There are so many ways you can help this program, but the biggest and easiest way to help us is to tell people about us! Let them know about our program, and how they can get their children involved in the sport!
