The Virginia Gators of Charlottesville Swim Club is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the Head Coach, four officers, and members-at-large. The Board of Directors addresses all issues affecting the welfare of the Club and makes decisions for the benefit of its members.

All parents interested in joining the Board are encouraged to contact a Board member. A Nominating Committee recruits and recommends a slate of candidates to the general membership for election to the Board. Any member, 21 years or older, may serve on the Board. Fulfilling key roles
Board members are elected by the club membership to serve a three-year term and may serve multiple terms. The Board of Directors holds monthly executive session meetings and an annual parent meeting. While the main focus of the Gators is always on the swimmers, the Board serves to ensure the continuation and excellence of the Club by fulfilling necessary business functions, assisting and supporting the coaching staff, and communicating between the board, coaching staff, and Gator families. Specific responsibilities include program management and design, managing Club finances, setting dues and fees, hiring and evaluating coaches, organizing volunteers, fundraising, marketing and promoting the club, press relations, interacting with other swimming organizations, organizing participation in swim meets, staging special events and much more.
Working as a team to handle a broad range of responsibilities
As a non-profit, volunteer Board, we seek to benefit from our members' backgrounds and diverse set of skills ranging from financial, managerial, legal, human resources, to facilities and operations experience. Board members are expected to demonstrate a keen interest in participating on a working board. Monthly executive meetings are typically held on the 1st Monday evening of each month. Committees typically meet on an ad hoc basis. Board members serve a three-year term, usually commencing at the start of the fiscal year. Prior volunteer experience, including Board service, is desirable, but not required.
Board member expectations
Board members are expected to meet the following requirements: volunteering for a three year term; attending all regularly scheduled Board meetings; participating on and attending meetings of at least one Board committee; participating in Board orientation and volunteer training; participating in fundraising by assisting in planning and attending fund raising events; providing expertise in policy development and decision making; participating, as required, in staff evaluations; evaluating self and Board as required by the Board; and, representing the organization and the best interests of our clients to the community.
