The Pool Design
Our vision for expansion has long been to add a 50 meter x 25 yard, Olympic-sized pool to NOVA's Gayton Road campus. We are pleased to be moving forward with this vision and plan to break ground in Spring 2018. The new 50 meter pool will be named The Sharp Pool, in honor of Richard L. Sharp. NOVA swimmers will soon have an enhanced training environment: more lanes for practice and access to a long course pool. NOVA will be able to host swim meets year-round. Additional capacity will also expand the club’s learn-to-swim program and allow us to broaden our outreach initiatives.
Taking a Phased Approach
The NOVA Board and staff thank you for your patience and support as we have persevered to find a solution that meets our organizational mission at a sustainable investment cost. The NOVA Board has been hard at work searching for the most fiscally sound strategy for adding The Sharp Pool. A phased project, beginning with an outdoor pool and separate building to house locker rooms, restrooms, and the mechanical room – Phase 1 – will be integrated into Phase 2’s eventual covered enclosure. The new heated outdoor pool will be operated year-round, and from October through March will be used for afternoon team practices for older swimmers.

Keeping it "Close to Home"
The placement of the new pool will be the same as originally planned, to the left of our existing structure (from the vantage point of Gayton Rd.). At the far end of the new pool, a separate building will house restrooms, locker rooms, and the mechanical room, all of which will be integrated into the eventual covered enclosure. Importantly, the plan for this first phase includes adding the footings and all other infrastructure features necessary for the final building design. The addition of the new building will necessitate additional parking as well, which will be added to the right of the current structure. In addition, by working with our landlord, The Wilton Company, we will have access to parking behind the Crofton Green Shopping Center as well.
We will continue to work with Hourigan Construction and Moseley Architects through the construction phase. Site excavation is slated to begin in April 2018, with completion scheduled for October 2018. The phased construction plan has received a favorable response from the Henrico County Planning Committee and District Supervisor, Mrs. Pat O’Bannon. The new Plan of Development was submitted to the County on October 27. Tentative design approval should be received by year end 2017, with final site approval by mid-February 2018.
Total project cost for Phase 1 is not expected to exceed $7 million. $1 million will come from NOVA’s operating account, $2.5 million (including the amount already raised) will come from fundraising, and the balance will be borrowed through loan financing. Our fundraising total from the first round came in at over $1.7 million. This included pledges from NOVA families, alumni, employees, and other sources – including the $500,000 grant generously awarded to NOVA by The Sharp Foundation. Our goal now is to ask our committed donors to fulfill their outstanding pledges and raise an additional $800,000 over the next six months.
Excitement is Growing!
Now is an exciting time for NOVA. Our collective energy, persistence, and teamwork will make our goal of adding The Sharp Pool a reality. NOVA swimmers deserve the best training environment possible, and we want to make swimming at the NOVA of Virginia Aquatics Center accessible to more people in the community. We welcome your involvement!
