Rookie

The HSSB Rookie level is for new swimmers with little experience who are excited about starting a FUN sport.

REQUIRED:

Swimmers must swim a minimum continuous 50 yards freestyle with side-breathing and 50 yards backstroke in a tryout.

Coaches will test new swimmers to make sure that they meet this requirement. If not, we will ask that swimmers go back to swim lessons and try the team again the next season.

White

White is for swimmers with legal free, back, and breaststroke. The focus of White is on technique, gaining stamina, starts/turns, and learning to use the time clock.

REQUIRED:

  • Swimmers must swim  2 x 50 legal breaststroke, legal open turn, with a pullout

  • Swimmers must swim 2 x 50 freestyle with breathing to the side,  flip turn, and dolphin kick off the wall in a streamline position

  • Swimmers must swim 2 x 50 backstroke with a flip turn, dolphin kick off the wall in a streamlined position, and have a good finish.

  • Swimmers should also be able to dive from the side of the pool, streamline off each wall after turning, execute a dolphin kick off each wall after turning (except after breaststroke), and be able to do a breaststroke pullout

  • Swimmers must have consistent legal strokes with breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle in practice AND meets.

 


Blue

Blue is for swimmers with legal free, back, fly and breaststroke. Blue group will have a stronger emphasis on endurance than in the White group. Blue group will still focus on fine tuning technique, just with more endurance and one more practice available per week.

REQUIRED:

Swimmers must:

  • swim 5 x 100 freestyle good technique and walls @ 2:00

  • 5 x 50 flutter kick @ 1:15

  • 4 x 100 IM with legal exchanges and strokes@ 2:15

  • Swimmers should be able to do 4 x 50 of all strokes legally @ 1:15

  • Swimmers should be able to dive from the block of the pool, streamline off each wall after turning, execute three dolphin kicks off each wall after turning (except after breaststroke) 

  • Swimmer's endurance will play a factor on moving to Blue as there is a big shift to more yards with some emphasis on technique. 

  • All four strokes must be legal in BOTH practice and meets consistently. 

  • Swimmers must have good flip turns and open turns


Bronze

Bronze is for swimmers in grades 5th through 8th who have gained the proper endurance for an increased training level. Increased yardage and intensity begins in bronze. Swimmers younger than 5th grade may be placed into bronze with approval from coaches.

REQUIRED

  • All strokes must be consistently legal. 

  • Swimmers must be able to dive from the blocks (including relay exchanges).

  • Swimmers must do consistent flip turns (freestyle and backstroke) in practice and at meets.

  • Swimmers must swim 5 x 100 free with good turns/walls and technique @ 1:50

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 50 fly legally with good turns/walls and technique @ 1:05

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 50 back legally with good turns/walls and technique @ 1:00

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 50 breast legally with good turns/walls and technique@ 1:05

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 100 IM @ 2:00

  • Swimmers must flutter kick 8 x 50 @ 1:15

Any swimmer that is potentially ready to move from blue to bronze will need to meet the above age and time requirements and/or have approval from lead coaches of those groups. A final decision will be made based on discussion between lead coaches of those groups.


Silver

Silver is for swimmers in grades 7th through 12th who have reached a training level capable of 2 hour practices. Swimmers younger than 7th grade may be placed in silver with approval from coaches.

REQUIRED:

  • Swimmers must swim 10 x 100 free @ 1:40

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 fly @ :55

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 back @ :50

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 breast @ 1:00

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 200 IM @ 3:30

  • Swimmers must kick 10 x 50 @ 1:05

Any swimmer that is potentially ready to move from bronze to silver will need to meet the above age and time requirements and/or have approval from lead coaches of those groups. A final decision will be made based on discussion between lead coaches of those groups.


Gold

Gold is for swimmers in grades 9th through 12th (or college) who are capable of the highest training level. Swimmers younger than 9th grade may be placed into gold with Coach Connor's approval.

REQUIRED:

  • Swimmers must swim 10 x 100 free @ 1:25

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 fly @ :50

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 back @ :45

  • Swimmers must swim 8 x 50 breast @ :55

  • Swimmers must swim 4 x 200 IM @ 3:00

  • Swimmers must kick 10 x 50 @ 1:00

Any swimmer that is potentially ready to move from silver to gold will need to meet the above age and time requirements and/or have approval from lead coaches of those groups. A final decision will be made based on discussion between lead coaches of those groups.
