Excellence in life through swimming

April 19, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we continued learning breaststroke.  We have worked on both the pull and kick.  Do not be concerned if your child does not get it right away.  Breaststroke can be hard for kids because it is very different from all of the other strokes and involves a great deal of coordination.  We have also continued to work on freestyle flip turns.

The swimmers have also begun doing short sets.  This means that they do multiple 25’s or 50’s on a specific time.  It builds endurance which is needed to eventually move up to AGT.  We talked about how to be a good teammate when we are doing sets.  This includes leaving 5 seconds apart and trying your best throughout the entire set.

Summer Practices:

As I’m sure you are aware, Sarah has taken a summer job opportunity that will take her away from the club for much of the spring and all of summer.  We very much look forward to her return in fall.  The plan for Novice is that Van will take over both groups for both administrative and in-water purposes.  This does NOT mean that the groups will be combined for the remainder of the season.  Brent Boock and Leah Westcott will be helping out on a regular basis throughout the rest of the season.

Official Visit:

Our first meet is coming up on April 28th.  While meets can be a little overwhelming for kids, it is a great experience.  To avoid some of the jitters, we are having an official visit our practice on Wednesday, April 25th.  I highly recommend that all swimmers, especially new kids try to be at this practice.  The official will walk through what happens during a meet and what the kids can expect to see.  We will also practice doing starts just as they will be done at the meet.

Meet Entries:

2018 SWAT Spring Fling (4/28/18) – Individual and relay entries are currently available for the SWAT meet.  If you think you will be late, need to leave early, or cannot attend the meet, please let Van know as it may have an effect on the relays.  Remember, all relays are subject to change based on any swimmers whose commitment may change.  You can view SWAT meet information HERE.

MFSC Spring Sprints (5/5/18) – Individual and relay entries are currently available for the MFSC meet.  Please let Van know if your availability has changed as it may have an impact on the relays.  You can view MFSC meet information HERE.

April 12, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we began learning butterfly.  Butterfly can be tricky for some swimmers, but with consistent practice we will get it.  We have talked a lot about keeping our legs together when we kick and how our arms look above and below the water.  We also spent time this week working on freestyle flip turns.  This will continue to be a focus for the rest of the season.

Parent Meeting:

Yesterday we held a Novice parent meeting to address any questions you may have about the season.  Below are the highlights of our meeting.  Please continue to ask questions at any time.

  • My last day coaching will be April 25th, unless baby comes early.  In my absence, Van Donkersgoed, Sarah Baker, and Leah Westcott will be covering N1 for the summer.  All questions relating to N1 meet entries or other general inquiries should go directly to Van.  You can e-mail him at vdonkersgoed@mac.com or call/text at 952-288-9458.  If you do not get a response from him within a business day, it is likely he did not receive your email.
  • We are doing an introduction to swim meets for the athletes on April 25th. Please try to make that practice regardless of if you are new to the club or an old pro.
  • If your schedule changes with respect to swim meets, it is imperative that you let Van know as soon as possible.

Meet Entries:

2018 SWAT Spring Fling (4/28/18) – Individual and relays entries are currently available for the SWAT meet.  Changes can still be made to this meet, but the sooner you let Van know, the better.  Also, if you think you will be late or need to leave early, please let him know as it may have an effect on the relays.  You can view SWAT meet information HERE.

MFSC Spring Sprints (5/5/18) – Individual entries are currently available for the MFSC meet.  You can still e-mail Van with any changes that need to be made to this meet.  You can view MFSC meet information HERE.

March 22, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we are starting backstroke.  When children struggle with backstroke, it tends to be because they are not looking up.  So, we started by focusing on keeping our heads back and our tummies up while we kick.  We also are working on rotating our shoulders and long arms.  As for diving, we were able to get through the diving progression quite quickly and have even started diving off the blocks!

If you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

March 15, 2018 Update

It was so great to see everyone at practice this week!  In the beginning of the season we start with the basics.  This includes streamlines, freestyle, and diving.  It is important that the swimmers know these basic skills to be successful in competitive swimming.

In freestyle, we are focusing mostly on breathing and kicking.  As for diving, we have a progression of dives we have to go through.  This is important so that when the swimmers get to a meet, they know the correct form for starts.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

March 8, 2018 Update

Welcome to all of our new swimmers!  We only have a few days left until the beginning of our season.  I hope that everyone is looking forward to their first practice.  I am so excited to welcome new swimmers to EBSC and the Novice 1 group.  As a Novice 1 group, our goal is to become better swimmers by working together and having fun.

Practice Reminders:

  • Tuesday is the first practice for the Novice 1 group.  Swimmers need a swim suit, goggles, and towel for practice.  I recommend a cap, especially for those with long hair, but it is in no way required.
  • Due to our insurance, only swimmers and coaches are allowed on deck.  So, if you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.
  • The practice attendance requirement for Novice 1 is 50% over the course of the entire season.  If you know that your swimmer will be missing practice for vacation or summer camp, I highly recommend that you start thinking about that now so that you can maintain the 50% requirement.

Thanks in advance for a great season!

February 22, 2018 Update

Thank you to everyone for a wonderful season!!!

Parents:

I appreciate all that you have done for your swimmers and for EBSC!  We had yet another successful season and it is in large part because of your hard work!  This includes getting your swimmers to practice, sitting for long hours at swim meets, and your efforts as volunteers.

Swimmers:

I appreciate all of your hard work at practice!  You always tried your best and accomplished great things.  You are all experienced teammates now and I look forward to watching you be leaders next season.

Regional Championships Results:

Congrats to everyone who competed in the Regionals!!!  We have been swimming very fast over the past few meets and this weekend was no exception.  Everyone had at least 2 best times and many swimmers competed in new events.  The following swimmers had best times: Taylor Artz (3), Joey Geske (4), Jane Johnson (7), Baleigh Miller (4), Elise Miller (5), Arnav Nandakumar (5), Yash Prag (7), Evan Prescott (6), Colin Runnells (3), Alia Soliman (3), Abbie Welch (2), Mollie Westfahl (3), and Ethan Zhang (2).  I am so proud of everyone!

12 & Under Banquet:

On Wednesday, March 7th, we have our 12 & under banquet.  It will be in the Brookfield East Cafeteria from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.  This is a casual event.  The coaches will speak about each swimmer and we will finish with a slide show.  Sign up for this event is due by February 28th.  You can view banquet information, including how to submit pictures for the slide show, HERE.

February 15, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on starts, turns, and finishes for all of the strokes.  We also have been practicing fast swimming.  This has involved doing just a few 50’s from a start and focusing on making each one look like we want it to in the meet this weekend.

Meet Focus:

TEAMWORK!!!  Teamwork is a very important part of swimming.  While we all have individual goals (ex: best times, legal strokes), we still need our teammates to help us out.  At meets, this happens in many different ways.

  1. Be at the meet on time for warm-ups.  We all have to get up early to be there and it shows respect for your teammates and coaches when you make that a priority.  If you cannot be at the meet on-time or at all, please let me know ASAP at 262-424-5411 or kjfresch@gmail.com.
  2. Cheer for your teammates.  The best way to make sure this happens is to sit with your team as much as possible and limit technology time.  Each swimmer has put in a ton of work over the course of the season and this shows support for all of those efforts.  This extends to teammates in other groups as well.

Meet Entries:

Regional Championships (2/16-18/18) – One more meet this season!  All 12 & under swimmers are competing in the AM session this weekend.  You should arrive at 6:40 am for both days.  While it is early, the entire session should be over around 11:00 am, so you can get an early start on the rest of your day.  As always, you may leave after your swimmer has talked to me about his/her final race.  You can view Regional meet information, including heat sheets and timelines, HERE.

February 8, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on backstroke.  We practiced starts, turns, and finishes.  We have really stressed the importance of counting our strokes from the flags to the wall when we are doing both turns and finishes.  We are also finishing sets for the season.

Practice Change:

This Friday, February 9th, there has been a practice change.  Practice has been cancelled due to a change in the boys’ high school schedule.

NBSC Valentine Open Results:

Congrats to everyone who competed this past weekend in New Berlin.  I greatly appreciate the effort that all the swimmers put forth.  I also am appreciative to the families who made it a priority to get to warm-ups on time or let me know well in advance.  It makes the day of the meet a lot less stressful for the coaches.  The swimmers who got best times included: Naya Abu Rajab (2), Salik Ahmed (3), Taylor Artz (2), Tess Lindstedt (2), Peter Mandella (2), Baleigh Miller (3), Krisha Pakala (3), Yash Prag (3), Colin Runnells (1), Abbie Welch (1), Mollie Westfahl (2), and Ethan Zhang (1).

2018 SST A+ Meet Results:

The results from the A+ Meet have also been posted.  Four of the Novice 1 swimmers who competed this weekend at Schroeder received best times.  Those swimmers included: Joey Geske (1), Jane Johnson (4), Elise Miller (3), and Evan (2).  Great job to everyone!!!

Meet Entries:

Regional Championships (2/16-18/18) – One more meet this season!  The Regional meet is our last meet for the younger swimmers.  Individual entries are currently available for viewing.  If you would like changes to be made, I need to know TODAY!!!  This means you can still be added to or removed from the meet.  Please let me know of any changes and I will take care of them in the system.  You can view Regional meet information HERE.

February 1, 2018 Update

January 25, 2018 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on butterfly.  We have talked about getting our arms all the way around in front of our body.  Since the meet this weekend has mostly shorter events, we also have been working on racing.  At the meet this past weekend, I found myself saying “I wish you swam that fast at practice” quite often.  So, I would like to see a high level of effort in practice these last few of weeks of the season.

SHOR “Swim Your Own Age” IMX High Point Challenge Results

Wow!  The swims this weekend were amazing!  Everyone had the opportunity to swim longer events that they may not have done in a while which was great.  Big accomplishments included everyone having at least one best time and some 8 & under swimmers achieved A+ qualification times.  The following swimmers had best times: Naya Abu Rajab (3), Salik Ahmed (2), Taylor Artz (4), Joey Geske (4), Jane Johnson (4), Rohith Kumar (4), Tess Lindstedt (5), Hannah Liu (2), Peter Mandella (4), Baleigh Miller (5), Elise Miller (5), Arnav Nandakumar (5), Evan Prescott (3), Colin Runnells (1), Abbie Welch (4), Mollie Westfahl (4), and Ethan Zhang (4).  CONGRATS!!!

Meet Expectations:

Warm Ups: The pre-meet warm up session is important for two, very practical reasons: (1) health & performance: swimmers who warm their bodies up are much less likely to get injured and much more likely to swim fast. (2) Team: warm up is an important time for the coaches to make sure that everyone is at the meet and they are all on the same page about the meet. Additionally, this is when we finalize the relays. Although swimming is very much an individual sport, there are many team aspects to the sport, which ultimately contribute to the overall development of the athlete. We all want to be part of something greater than ourselves, and learning that young is important. Warm up sets that tone from the outset of a meet.

Warm Down Facility Use: Kristen and I have agreed that the Novice swimmers are not allowed in the warm down pool(s) if they are available at a swim meet for two reasons: (1) safety: often these pools are not well "guarded," and packed with swimmers - often older kids. As such, we cannot supervise the Novice swimmers. (2) Performance: the novice swimmers get more tired at meets than older athletes. They don't need the warm up before a race, besides the one offered at the beginning of the session, and they don't need the cool down. The more swimming they do only serves to tire them out.

Meet Entries:

MFSC Speedo Sprint Cup Challenge (1/27/18) – This meet is this weekend at SCHROEDER AQUATIC CENTER.  Swimmers should arrive by 7:45 am for the AM session (9 & under) and by 11:30 am for the PM session (10 & over).  There are both a detailed timeline and heat sheets available for viewing on the website.  You can view MFSC meet information HERE.

NBSC Valentine Open (2/3-4/18) – Entries are currently available for the NBSC meet.  While I cannot make any individual changes, please let me know if your availability for this meet has changed as there are relays that will most likely need to be adjusted.  You can view NBSC meet information HERE.

Regional Championships (2/16-18/18) – The Regional meet is our last meet of the season for the younger swimmers.  While it is a three day meet (Friday – Sunday), Novice swimmers only compete on Saturday and Sunday.  Individual entries are currently available for viewing.  There are still a couple of weeks before the entry needs to be submitted, so there is still plenty of time to adjust your commitment to this meet.  This means you can still be added to or removed from the meet.  You can choose to have your swimmer compete either on one or both days.  Please let me know of any changes and I will take care of them in the system.  You can view Regional meet information HERE.

J

December 7, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on butterfly.  Specifically, we have practiced quick breaths.  I have noticed throughout numerous practices that we are getting a little lazy when it comes to freestyle flip turns and streamlines.  So, we have spent time this week revisiting the importance of both.

BAC Holiday Splash Results:

Amazing is how I would describe the BAC meet this weekend!!!  Every swimmer achieved two or more best times and most swimmers had the opportunity to swim new and longer events.  The following swimmers had best times: Taylor Artz (6), Joey Geske (5), Jane Johnson (6), Elise Miller (3), Evan Prescott (5), Alia Soliman (2), Mollie Westfahl (2), and Ethan Zhang (3).

November 30, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on breaststroke.  Specifically, we have practiced fast arms and glide.  We also have revisited the importance of underwater pullouts.  Swimmers did a set Wednesday night that focused specifically on speed.  I was very impressed with the results.  It makes me think that we will be seeing many best times in our upcoming meets.

Meet Entries:

EBSC Escape to Hawaii (1/6/17) – Individual and relays entries are currently available for the EBSC meet.  Changes can still be made to this meet, but the sooner you let me know, the better.  Also, if you think you will be late or need to leave early, please let me know as it may have an effect on the relays.  You can view EBSC meet information HERE.

On a Personal Note:

I know this is a repeat, but in case you missed it last week.  I wanted to let you know that I am expecting a baby girl next year.  My due date is April 29th.  My family, especially my son, is anxious for her to arrive.  Brent, myself, and others are working on a plan for covering my group next season after the baby arrives.

November 16, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on freestyle.  Specifically we have talked about continuous and fast kick.  We also have revisited the importance of streamlines after both starts and turns.  Sets are also continuing to not only get faster, but also a little longer.  Thankfully, instead of complaints I am seeing the swimmers rise to the challenge.  Yea!!!  Go us!!!

Turkey Relays:

This Saturday, November 18th, we have Turkey Relays at East.  I am really excited to see all of the 12 & Under swimmers work together to swim relays with a Thanksgiving theme.  You do not need to sign up, but please try your best to be on time or even a little early.  The sooner we can get started the more time we have for fun!!!

New this year, we are asking that everyone bring one nonperishable food item on that day.  The food will be donated to the school that Coach Carissa works at, Horace Mann Elementary.  The school runs a Community Closet that provides clothes for families in need. From now until Christmas, the Community Closet hosts a food drive for the school’s families. The food that is brought in for Turkey Relays will directly benefit the students that Coach Carissa works with every day.

SHOR Plaque-tacular Results:

Congrats on the great swimming at the meet this past weekend!  The kids swam a lot of events, especially if they also did relays, and did a great job!  The following swimmers had best times: Salik Ahmed (2), Taylor Artz (3), Joey Geske (1), Jane Johnson (2), Tess Lindstedt (1), Hannah Liu (3), Peter Mandella (2), Baleigh Miller (1), Elise Miller (1), Arnav Nandakumar (1), Krisha Pakala (3), Spandana Peddagoria (1), Yash Prag (1), Evan Prescott (1), Alia Soliman (2), Mollie Westfahl (3), and Ethan Zhang (2).

Meet Entries:

BAC Holiday Splash (12/1-3/17) – No changes can be made to entries at this time.  However, if your availability does change, I would appreciate knowing ahead of time.  So you are aware, Van will be coaching both novice groups on Saturday and I will have both groups on Sunday.  You can view BAC meet information HERE.

November 9, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have focused on butterfly.  We worked on getting our arms all the way out of the water and in front of us.  We also talked about looking forward when we breathe, taking quick breaths and not pausing our stroke or kick while we breathe.  We also have spent time on butterfly starts.

I have been very impressed with the effort I am seeing during sets.  Every swimmer is starting to do harder sets and all swimmers are rising to the challenge!!!  It is great that I am seeing consistent best efforts from all of the swimmers.

Turkey Relays:

Next Saturday, November 18th, we have Turkey Relays.  This is a great event that combines all of the 12 & Under swimmers together to do fun relays with a Thanksgiving theme.  In the spirit of giving, we are asking that everyone bring one nonperishable food item on that day.  The food will be donated to the school that Coach Carissa works at, Horace Mann Elementary.  The school runs a Community Closet that provides clothes for families in need. November 2, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we are working on breaststroke.  We have primarily focused on gliding at the end of our stroke and underwater pullouts.  I also am continuing to stress the importance of freestyle flip turns and two-hand touches in both breaststroke and butterfly.

Recently we have had a couple practices where we have had three lanes instead of two.  This extra space has allowed us to separate into lanes by ability and do some faster sets as a result.  An important aspect of sets that we are working on this week is putting forth our best effort for the entire set.  I understand kids get tired, but it makes me sad when swimmers go really fast to pass their teammates and then choose to not try their best afterwards.  My goal is for us to get in the habit of always doing our best.

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

I hope everyone had fun at Halloween Bowling.  I am sad I was unable to attend, but heard all the costumes were great!  I’m looking forward to our next 12&Under event, Turkey Relays!

Meet Entries:

SHOR Plaque-tacular (11/12/17) – The individual and relay entries for this meet are available in the system.  Please note that 8&Under swimmers are entered in the 10&Under 50 free.  I did this purposefully because our youngest swimmers do not get a ton of opportunities to do the 50 free.  Also, remember that relays entries are subject to change.  This entry has been submitted to the host, however please let me know if your availability changes so I can plan ahead for relay changes.  You can view SHOR meet information HERE.

BAC Holiday Splash (12/1-3/17) – No changes can be made to entries at this time.  However, if your availability does change, I would appreciate knowing ahead of time.  You can view BAC meet information HERE.

As always, if you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

October 26, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we are working on backstroke.  We have been practicing keeping a strong kick throughout the entire swim.  We continue to work on freestyle flip turns and have even started working on backstroke flip turns.  We also are talking about backstroke starts and breakouts.

The sets the swimmers are doing are continuing to get faster.  I am very impressed by the effort everyone is putting into completing these sets.  The kids are also getting the hang of going 5 seconds apart.  This may seem like no big deal, but it makes a difference when we are doing sets.  It also shows me that they are concentrating which is VERY important.

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

12&Under Halloween Bowling is this weekend.  It will be a ton of fun to see all of the kids in costume.  If you are able to join us on that day, I would highly recommend it.  Sign up for this event is due today, October 26th.  You can see more information regarding Halloween Bowling HERE.

EBSC Fall Classic Results:

The EBSC meet this past weekend was fantastic!  Everyone tried their hardest and that is all I can ask!!!  Also, everyone who swam a 50 free did a flip turn, so go N1!!!  The following swimmers had best times: Naya Abu Rajab (3), Taylor Artz (3), Riley Budde (4), Joey Geske (3), Jane Johnson (3), Rohith Kumar (2), Tess Lindstedt (4), Hannah Liu (4), Baleigh Miller (2), Elise Miller (1), Arnav Nandakumar (3), Spandana Peddagoria (1), Yash Prag (1), Evan Prescott (2), Colin Runnells (2), Alia Soliman (4), Abbie Welch (1), Mollie Westfahl (3), and Ethan Zhang (3).  CONGRATS!!!

This entry will be submitted to the host at the end of the month, so please let me know if any changes need to be made, especially to relays.  You can view SHOR meet information HERE.

BAC Holiday Splash (12/1-3/17) – No changes can be made to entries at this time.  However, if your availability does change, I would appreciate knowing ahead of time.  You can view BAC meet information HERE.

October 19, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we worked on freestyle.  We focused on what our arms look like underwater and continuously kicking.

At the meet this weekend I want everyone to work on being a good teammate as well.  This means spending your off time cheering for other EBSC swimmers, even if they are not in our group!  Let’s try to avoid the electronics and focus on the meet. smiley

EBSC Swim-A-Long:

Congratulations to everyone who swam in the Swim-A-Long this weekend.  I was really impressed!  The following swimmers participated from Novice 1: Joey Geske (2,250 yds), Arnav Nandakumar (2,000 yds), Evan Prescott (1,950 yds), Tess Lindstedt (1,700 yds), and Elise Miller (1,550 yds).

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

12&Under Halloween Bowling is coming up on October 28th.  It is a lot of fun to see all of the kids in costume and having fun spending time with their teammates outside of the pool.  It is one of the many events that make EBSC different than other swim clubs.  If you are able to join us on that day, I would highly recommend it.  Sign up for this event is due this Saturday, October 21st.  You can see more information regarding Halloween Bowling HERE.

Meet Entries:

EBSC Fall Classic (10/21/17) – This weekend we have the EBSC meet at Brookfield East.  Make sure you check the Gator Blast to verify what time you should arrive.  I expect that your swimmer is at the meet 15 minutes prior to warm-ups.  That gives you time to write on their arm and get settled.  Our meets consistently run on time, so there is not much wiggle room for being late.  If you cannot attend the meet or will be arriving late, please let me know at practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or call/text me at 262-424-5411.  It is never too late to let me know!!! I do not like to take swimmers off of relays, but it will happen if necessary.  You can view EBSC meet information, including timeline, heat sheet, job sign-up, and entries, HERE.

SHOR Plaque-tacular (11/12/17) – The individual entries for this meet are available in the system.  Please note that 8&Under swimmers are entered in the 10&Under 50 free.  I did this purposefully because our youngest swimmers do not get a ton of opportunities to do the 50 free.  You can view SHOR meet information HERE.

BAC Holiday Splash (12/1-3/17) – There are a few days for changes to be made, but let me know ASAP.  You can view BAC meet information HERE.

October 11, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we began learning butterfly.  Butterfly can be tricky for some swimmers.  We focused a lot on keeping our legs together when we kick and how our arms look above and below the water.  We also continued working on freestyle flip turns.  Now that we have officially spent two weeks learning how to do flip turns, I expect that everyone does them both in practice and at meets!  I know this is a challenge everyone can accomplish.

EBSC Swim-A-Long:

The Swim-A-Long is this weekend!  Thank you to everyone who helped raise funds.  As a team we raised over $9,000!!!  For those who did raise money, watch in the next day or two for further information as to when your swimmer will need to be at the pool on Saturday.

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

As a reminder, 12&Under Halloween Bowling is just around the corner.  The event is held on October 28th and sign up is due on Saturday, October 21st.  This is a fun event for the kids to attend.  How can you go wrong with costumes, pizza, and bowling???  You can see more information regarding Halloween Bowling HERE.

Meet Entries:

EBSC Fall Classic (10/21/17) – Entries have been submitted, so any changes will need to be made the day of the meet.  If your availability changes, please still keep me informed as it may affect relays and we would like to know about that sooner rather than later.  Also, please make sure you have taken care of volunteer sign-up.  You can view EBSC meet information, including job sign-up and entries, HERE.

BAC Holiday Splash (12/1-3/17) – There are still time for changes to be made, but let me know ASAP.  You can view BAC meet information HERE.

October 5, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we began learning breaststroke.  We have worked on both the pull and kick.  Do not be concerned if your child does not get it right away.  Breaststroke can be hard for kids because it is very different from all of the other strokes and involves a great deal of coordination.  We also spent time this week working on freestyle flip turns.  We will continue to work on this over the course of the season.

EBSC Swim-A-Long:

We are just a little over a week away from our Swim-A-Long.  To participate in this event, you must raise at least some funds.  The due date for donations is Tuesday, October 10th.  I look forward to seeing many of you there.  The entire team has raised almost $7,000, so keep up the good work!

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

As a reminder we have 12&Under Halloween Bowling coming up on October 28th.  The kids always have fun.  They bowl, eat pizza, and are part of a costume contest.  If you are available that day, I highly recommend attending.  Sign up is due on Saturday, October 21st.  You can see information regarding Halloween Bowling HERE.

EBSC Fall Classic & BAC Holiday Splash:

As a reminder, the individual entries for both the EBSC and BAC meets are available on the website for viewing.  You can view the EBSC entries HERE and the BAC entries HERE.  I have received just a few e-mails regarding changes, but please continue to contact me about these meets if necessary.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

September 28, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we are starting backstroke.  When children struggle with backstroke, it tends to be because they are not looking up.  So, we started by focusing on keeping our heads back and our tummies up while we kick.  We also are working on rotating our shoulders and long arms.  As for diving, we were able to get through the diving progression quite quickly and have even started diving off the blocks!

12 & Under Halloween Bowling:

We have a special event that is quickly approaching. You can see information regarding Halloween Bowling HERE.

EBSC Fall Classic & BAC Holiday Splash:

The individual entries for both the EBSC and BAC meet are available on the website for viewing.  You can view the EBSC entries HERE and the BAC entries HERE.  If you have had any changes in availability, please let me know as soon as possible.  You can e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com.  This is especially important for the EBSC meet because there are relays.  While there are no relays at the BAC meet, I would still appreciate knowing if there have been any change in your plans.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

September 21, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

It was so great to see everyone at practice this week!  In the beginning of the season we start with the basics.  This includes streamlines, freestyle, and diving.  It is important that the swimmers know these basic skills to be successful in competitive swimming.

In freestyle, we are focusing mostly on breathing and kicking.  As for diving, we have a progression of dives we have to go through.  This is important so that when the swimmers get to a meet, they know the correct form for starts.

EBSC Fall Classic:

The individual entries for the EBSC meet on October 21st are in the system.  Click HERE to link to the event page.  If you have had any changes in availability, please let me know as soon as possible.  You can e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com.  Your swimmer arriving late or leaving early may affect relays and we want to be able to make those changes sooner rather than later.  The relay entries are also in the system, but are subject to change as we hear back from families.

BAC Holiday Splash:

The BAC Holiday Splash meet is in Middleton on December 2nd – 3rd.  There are events on Friday, but no novice swimmers will compete in those events.  You can expect to see entries in the system for this meet early next week.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

September 14, 2017 Update

It was great to touch base with so many new parents on Tuesday.  This coming Monday is the first practice for the Novice 1 group.  Swimmers only need a swim suit, goggles, and towel for practice.  I recommend a cap, especially for those with long hair, but it is in no way required.  I look forward to the Novice 1 swimmers meeting each other and getting to know their teammates.

One final reminder, only swimmers and coaches are allowed on deck.  So, if you have any questions for me, feel free to flag me down 15 minutes before practice starts or 15 minutes after practice ends.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.  Thanks in advance for a great season!

September 7, 2017 Update

Welcome back!  We have a little more than a week left until the beginning of our season.  I am so excited to welcome new swimmers to EBSC and the Novice 1 group.  As a Novice 1 group, our goal is to become better swimmers by working together and having fun.

A couple of reminders for next week.  On Tuesday, we have the New Member Meeting at 5:30 pm.  Following the New Member Meeting will be the Annual Meeting at 6:30 pm.  I will be available to answer any questions you may have at that time.  You can also e-mail me at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

Also on Tuesday, everyone will be able to buy or order swim attire (suits, caps, bags, etc.).  For practice, swimmers need a swim suit, goggles, and towel for practice.  I recommend a cap, especially for those with long hair, but it is in no way required.  For meets, we prefer that swimmers wear solid colored navy or black suits.  There are EBSC suits and caps available to order.  While I do not require either, it is nice when everyone is wearing team apparel.

Meets:

This weekend we have the PX3 meet in Pleasant Prairie.  Both Van and I will be coaching this meet.  Van will be there on Saturday and I will be there on Sunday.   We have no relays at this meet, but it is still important that we know if your swimmer will late or not present.  You can call or text Van at 952-288-9458 and myself at 262-424-5411.

June 28, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on freestyle.  We have focused mostly on breathing.  The kids have been practicing breathing every 3 or 4 strokes.  We also have worked on continuous fast kick throughout our stroke, but especially while we are breathing.

Practice:

Beginning next week, Wednesday practices will be at East.  They will still be held from 3:30 – 4:30.

Please continue to keep me updated with any extended leaves from practice.  I appreciate knowing about family vacations and when kids go off to camp.

Meets:

Today’s PX3 Triangular meet went well.  I hope everyone had fun with their buddies.  Many swimmers got best times in multiple events.  I was proud of the effort that everyone seemed to put forth.  Swimmers also did very well at the Waukesha Express meet.  I kept watch on swims and saw many best times.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know before or after practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

June 21, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on butterfly.  We have focused mostly on quick breathing and long arms.  We also tried something new yesterday.  We did vertical kicking in the well.  This worked on fast kicks.  Sets are also getting more difficult as the season progresses.

Practice:

This week we only have three practices due to the Noah’s Ark trip on Thursday.  That practice will not be rescheduled.

As the summer continues, I know families will be going on trips and kids go off to camp.  If you could keep me in the loop on these things, I would greatly appreciate it.

Meets:

Our small crew at the JAGS meet did very well this past weekend. This weekend swimmers will be competing at the WEST meet.  Van will be the novice coach at this meet.  If you need to get a hold of him, you can call or text him at 952-288-9458.

Finally, I completed entries for the Silver State meet that we are hosting July 21st – 23rd.  All novices are signed up to swim both Saturday and Sunday unless a note was included indicating otherwise.  Some of the events that were available to compete in are somewhat long.  I thought hard about this entry and am confident that each swimmer will be successful in the events they are entered in.  Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding this entry or anything else.  You can catch me before or after practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

June 15, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on breaststroke.  We have focused mostly on finishing our kick and gliding at the end of our stroke.  They have also done a good job of switching to outdoor practice in the meter pool.

Practice at Wirth Park:

The novice groups gather and stretch on the grass outside of the pool area.  Swimmers should not wait on deck before practice starts.  After stretches, we all walk through the locker rooms and onto the pool deck at the same time.  We do this to make sure we stay out of the way of patrons who are exiting the pool area at 4:30.

As a reminder, parents are not to be on deck during practice.  If you would like to stay for practice, feel free to watch from outside the fence.  The best view is at the slide end of the pool.

June 8, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on backstroke flip turns and fast flutter kick.  Since this is our first time practicing back turns, we focused mostly on counting our strokes and the crossover stoke.  This is a very difficult skill for swimmers to master, so we will continue to practice before I expect to see them consistently at meets.

EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic

The EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic are this Saturday.  Below is a timeline for both events.  I cannot wait to see everyone try their best and have fun!

           8:00-8:30:   Check-In/Team Warm-Up

           8:40:   Event Start

           Group Race order will be 15&O – 13&14 – 11&12 – 9&10 – 8&U

          9:45:  Projected Finish

          10:00–12:00: Team Picnic

Practice at Wirth Park:

This Friday, June 9th, we start practicing outdoors.

Meets:

The results are in for both the EBSC 8 & Under meet and the MFSC Summer Splash meet.  The swimmers with best times at the EBSC meet were Evelyn (1), Joey (3), Hannah (2), Sam (1), Josh (2), and Evan (2).

At the MFSC meet, the following swimmers had best times: Sara (2), Taylor (2), Mark (1), Bella (6), Hannah (2), Baleigh (2), Arnav (2), Spandana (4), Vino (3), and Colin (4).

Our next swim meet is the JAGS meet (6/17-18).  Van will be the novice coach at this meet.  If you need to get a hold of him, you can call or text him at 952-288-9458.

I recently completed multiple entries for upcoming meets.  I will send out e-mails with the events that swimmers are entered in.  Also, you are still able to sign-up your swimmer for the Silver State meet that we are hosting July 21st – 23rd.  Novices will only compete on Saturday and Sunday.  Please contact me ASAP if you would like to be entered.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.  You can catch me before or after practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

June 1, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on freestyle flip turns.  We talk about the point of a flip turn being that we get in and off the wall fast.  Our emphasis is keeping our heads tucked and pushing off in a streamline to make our turns as efficient and beneficial as possible.  I expect that the kids always do flip turns, even if they are not the best.  Practice makes perfect!

Team Events

The EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic are on June 10th.  Sign-up for the biathlon has ended, but you can still sign-up for the picnic until June 2nd.  Even if you cannot attend the biathlon, going to the picnic is still a ton of fun.  Click HERE to link to the event page.

Information for the 12 & Under Noah's Ark trip on Thursday, June 22nd is now available.  The sign-up deadline for this event is June 20th.  For more details, click HERE to link to the event page.  Novice practice will be canceled on that day.

Practice at Wirth Park:

Next week Friday, June 9th, we start practicing outdoors.  The novice groups gather and stretch on the grass outside of the pool area.  Then, we all walk through the locker rooms and onto the pool deck at the same time.  Swimmers should not wait on deck before practice starts.  For those who use the locker rooms to get ready before practice, come back to the grass when you finish.  We do this to make sure we stay out of the way of patrons who are exiting the pool area at 4:30.

Also, just as with indoor practice, parents should not be on the pool deck.  If you would like to watch practice, feel free to bring a chair and watch from outside the fence.  I promise you will not be the only parent trying to avoid the traffic on Pilgrim during that time of day!

Meets:

The EBSC 8 & Under meet is on Friday.  Warm-ups begin at 5:00 pm, so just get there as soon as you can following school.  The meet will run from 6:00 pm – 8:40 pm.  We run very efficient meets, so you can count on that being the finish time of the meet.  Click HERE to find the heat sheet at our website.

The MFSC meet is on Saturday and Sunday.  Swimmers 9-12 years old are in the AM session and the 8 & Unders are in the PM session.  The timeline is listed below.  Please remember that warmups are important, so swimmers should arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time.  Heat sheets will be available for purchase at the swim meet.

Saturday AM Session - Warmups:  7:30 am - Start:  8:30 am - End:  12:40 pm

May 25, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on the 100 IM.  This means that each day we have focused on a different stroke.  We have also practiced changing from one stroke to the next legally.  There has been lots of improvement, but there is always room for more practice.

EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic

The EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic are on June 10th.  The final date for sign-up for both events are approaching quickly.  The biathlon due date is May 28th and the picnic due date is June 2nd.  If you have not yet registered, I highly recommend that you do.  It is a great event that the kids enjoy every year.  When you sign-up, please remember that you must register separately for each event (once for the biathlon and once for picnic).  Signing-up for one does not automatically include you for the other.

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on freestyle.  We have talked specifically about what our arms should look like underwater and that it is important to take quick breaths.  Also, we have continued to practice sets.  Next week our sets will start to get a little faster.  I know that our group can rise to the challenge and be successful with these harder sets.

May 11, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we have been working on butterfly.  We have talked specifically about how our arms should look above the water and taking quick breaths.  Also, we have continued to practice sets.

In practice we talk about being good teammates.  This important skill applies to everything we do.  During sets this means leaving 5 seconds apart and making sure everyone has the opportunity to finish to the wall.

Practice Change:

This Friday, May 12th, practice has been cancelled for the N2, N1, and AGT groups.

EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic

Sign-up for the biathlon and team picnic are now available.  This is an event that is unique to EBSC and is very fun for the kids.  I recommend that you attend if possible.  When you sign-up, please remember that you must sign-up separately for each event (once for the biathlon and once for picnic).  Signing-up for one does not automatically include you for the other.

MFSC Spring Sprints:

This past weekend we competed at Menomonee Falls.  Some swimmers competed in new events including the 50 fly and 100 IM.  Everyone tried their best and posted great times.

May 4, 2017 Update

Weekly Focus:

This week we are working on breaststroke.  We have primarily focused on gliding at the end of our stroke and underwater pullouts.  I also am continuing to stress the importance of freestyle flip turns and two-hand touches in both breaststroke and butterfly.  Our sets are also starting to get a bit more difficult.

Practice Change:

Next week Friday, May 12th, practice has been cancelled for the N2, N1, and AGT groups.  This practice will not be rescheduled for the N1 group.

EBSC Biathlon and Team Picnic:

Sign-up for the biathlon and team picnic are now available.  I HIGHLY recommend that you attend if possible.  It is great to see the entire team together at one time.  When you sign-up, please remember that you must sign-up separately for each event (once for the biathlon and once for picnic).  Signing-up for one does not automatically include you for the other.

SWAT Spring Fling:

The SWAT meet this past weekend was fantastic!  Everyone tried their hardest and swam at least one best time!!!  The following swimmers had best times: Taylor Artz (2), Sam Bergin (2), Evelyn DeGarmo (2), Meghan Jeide (2), Mark Kassab (2), Bella Krynicka (2), Won Lee (2), Tucker Lindtedt (2), Hannah Liu (2), Arnav Nandakumar (1), Spandana Peddagoria (2), Evan Prescott (1), Vinod Raja (2), and Colin Runnells (3).  CONGRATS!!!

MFSC Spring Sprints:

This Saturday we have the MFSC meet at Menomonee Falls High School.  Below is a timeline including when swimmers should arrive.  Remember that warm-ups are not optional!  There are relays this weekend, so it is especially important that I know ahead of time if you are going to be late, need to leave early, or cannot attend.  It can be complicated to make relay changes, so the more notice I have the better.  You can let me know before or after practice, contact me by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or text me at 262-424-5411.

April 28, 2017 Update

This weekend is our first meet!!!  I cannot believe it is already here.  I am excited to see how well everyone swims.  I anticipate lots of great swims and best times.  Listed below is the session information, including times.  Please remember, warm-ups for the meet are important, so arrive 15 minutes before so we are ready to get in when they start.  If you cannot attend the meet or will be arriving late, please let me know at practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or text me at 262-424-5411.  We have relays signed up for the AM session and would prefer to have as much time as possible to adjust if necessary.  All PM relays have been canceled in an effort to shorten the session.

While meets can be a little overwhelming for kids, it is a great experience.  To avoid some of the jitters, we are having an official visit our practice on Friday, April 28th (tomorrow) from 6:15 to 6:45. I highly recommend that all swimmers, especially new kids try to be at this practice.  The official will walk through what happens during a meet and what the kids can expect to see.  We will also practice doing starts just as they will be done at the meet.

Saturday AM Session (8&U):

Warm-ups 7:30-8:30 AM

Meet start 8:40 AM

Estimated End 12:20 PM

Saturday PM Session (9-12):

Warm-ups 12:30-1:30 PM

Estimated End 5:40 PM

April 20, 2017 Update

Elmbrook Eats! - Monday, April 24th 2017 - Buffalo Wild Wings - Bluemound Road - 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm - Elmbrook Swim Club will reveive 10% of all profits from our group!  - Must present ticket at time of purchase - HERE

I hope everyone had a relaxing Spring Break!  This week we worked on freestyle.  While we reviewed flutter kick, we primarily talked about what our arms look like above and below water.  We have also continued to work on freestyle flip turns.  Now that we will have spent two weeks working on turns, I am expecting that the swimmers consistently do them at practice and, hopefully, at meets.

The swimmers have also begun doing short sets.  This means that they do multiple 25’s or 50’s on a specific time.  It builds endurance which is needed to eventually move up to AGT.  Finally, meet entries for the following meets are now available for viewing: SWAT (4/29), MFSC (5/6), EBSC (6/2), and MFSC (6/3-4).  If you have any questions regarding the meets or anything else, please let me know 15 minutes before or after practice, by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com, or call/text me at 262-424-5411.

April 6, 2017 Update

This week we began learning butterfly.  Like breaststroke, butterfly can be tricky for some swimmers.  We focused a lot on keeping our legs together when we kick and how our arms look above and below the water.  We also spent time this week working on freestyle flip turns.  We will continue to work on this over the course of the season.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com or catch me 15 minutes before or after any practice.

HAVE A WONDERFUL SPRING BREAK!!!

March 30, 2017 Update

This week we began learning breaststroke.  We have worked on both the pull and kick.  Do not be concerned if your child does not get it right away.  Breaststroke can be hard for kids because it is very different from all the other strokes and involves a great deal of coordination.

Last night we had the Novice 1 & 2 parent meeting.  If you were unable to attend or still have questions for the novice coaches, please feel free to reach out to us.  We are available 15 before or after any practice.  You can also get a hold of me by e-mail at kjfresch@gmail.com or call/text me at 262-424-5411.
