Elmbrook Masters Swimming
Elmbrook Masters is a fun and competitive swim club for swimmers aged 18 and older.
We have registration twice annually – in September for our indoor or “short course” season, and in May for our outdoor or “long course” season. Practices times vary by season, but they are generally held Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and also in the mornings for the long course season. We swim at the Brookfield East and Brookfield Central High School pools, as well as the Wiberg Aquatic Center at Wirth Park in the summer.
We are professionally coached by Coach Fred Russell, and other members of the Elmbrook Swim Club coaching staff. Our members enjoy swimming in a wide variety of competitions – local, state and national meets, open water races as well as in triathlons. All of our members are USMS registered masters swimmers and enjoy the benefits of masters swimming.
If you are interested in more information or joining, please contact Julie Van Cleave at firstname.lastname@example.org. We do have pool space constraints, so all new member requests are on a first come, first served basis, and all prospective swimmers try out a practice or two with us before they join.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Where are practices held? For our Fall/Winter indoor 'short course' session, we swim at either Brookfield Central or East High School pools. In the Spring/Summer outdoor 'long course' session, we start indoors an the high school pools and then move outdoors to the Wiberg Aquatic Center at Wirth Park once the pool opens in mid-June.
Q. When are practices held? When we are indoors, we swim Tuesday and Thursday evenings for an hour and a half. The start times vary depending on other users of the pools (high school teams and EBSC age group swimmers), but masters typically start at 6:00 or 6:30 PM. Our practices are listed on the Master Calendar on this website. Our group is labeled 'M', and if you see M-C-6:30 on the calendar, that means Masters are swimming at Central at 6:30 PM. All times are PM unless otherwise noted. (E=East and W=Wirth.) When we are outdoors, we have practices Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6-7 AM and Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:00 PM.
Q. How much does it cost? The cost for the 2018-19 indoor session (mid-September through May 31) is $378. The outdoor session is from June 1 -July 31 and costs $100. Session prices are determined each year. In addition, for the outdoor session, $25 is charged for a pool pass at Wirth.
Q. How do I get on the team? Our team has 45-50 spots available, depending on the season. Current swimmers get the first option to sign up for the upcoming season, and then we open up to new members once we determine how many spots we have available. This is also done on a first-come, first-serve basis. ALL swimmers must come and try out a practice or two before signing up. Occasionally we have spots available mid-season. Please contact Julie (email@example.com) if you are interested in joining and she will arrange to have you come to a practice, and put you on the prospective member waiting list, or join the team if there is an open spot.
Q. How does the registration process work? Once you have attended a practice, and if there is an opening, a registration link to our online registration system will be sent to you by our registration coordinator. Fees are paid online by credit card or other electronic payment. In addition, all swimmers must be registered with U.S. Masters (USMS) swimming for the current calendar year. This is critical for insurance purposes. More information about USMS can be found on the Wisconsin Masters website, www.swim-wimasters.org. When signing up for Wisconsin Masters, our Workout Group is EBM, Elmbrook Masters.
Q. What do I need to bring to practice/what can I expect at practice? Swimmers are responsible for their own equipment, which normally includes fins, pull buoy and kickboard. At practice, the lanes are organized by speed, so swimmers of similar speed swim together. Coach Fred Russell organizes the practice with workouts that build over the season to target particular meets that swimmers are looking to attend, particularly Wisconsin Masters State Meet in spring, as well as Spring USMS National Championships.
Q. Do I need to participate in meet competitions to be on the team? Participation in meets is highly recommended, and our members enjoy racing and competing throughout the year in a variety of competitions. Each swimmer has their own competition goals, while we also have a strong team atmosphere. Current and past meet schedules are shown on the Wisconsin Masters website.
Q. Anything else I should know? We are a fun and competitive group of swimmers from a variety of swim backgrounds and ages. We have a variety of social events over the year where we have fun, and mostly talk about swimming .
