Emerging Leader Academy - Facilitating Coach Application
The Emerging Leader Academy, formerly called the Leadership Development Camp, is a comprehensive, season-long program that further develops the leadership capacity of YMCA swimmers. Twenty-two participants are selected through an application process that includes a leadership essay, letters of recommendation, school transcript and evidence of community service work.
While there is a 3 1/2 day on-site "swimposium" included in the program, it is only one component. Other aspects include online learning, interviews, self-assessment, service projects, conference calls and a series of assignments. Topics addressed in the ELA include leadership styles, communication, problem-solving and decision-making, difficult conversations, inclusion, influencing culture and mentorship.
The ELA is facilitated by four current YMCA Swimming coaches, with guidance from Y-USA. Two are members of the YMCA Swimming Coaches Association Executive Committee. Two other coaches are selected through an application process. Facilitating coaches will lead the majority of the program components throughout the academy, including but not limited to the October "swimposium".
Facilitating coaches must have a minimum of five (5) years of YMCA swim coaching experience, currently coach middle and/or high school swimmers, be members of USA Swimming and have all current YMCA, USA Swimming and U.S. Center for Safe Sport certifications, screenings and trainings.
Facilitating coach applicants should have experience leading intentional leadership development, communication, decision making and/or other related programs, projects or activities with teens.
Applications are due July 1, 2019. Applicants will be notified by July 15, 2019.
