It's that time of year again! Time for our biggest annual team fundraiser, the BAC Swim-A-Thon!
Swim-A-Thon is a fundraiser done in conjunction with USA Swimming in which participants earn money by swimming lengths of the pool. Swimmers have a two-hour period to swim a maximum of 200 lengths (swimming, kicking, fins, etc.). Your swimmer does not have to complete 200 - but don't be surprised if they end up doing more than you think! Participants can get pledges from businesses, family, neighbors, etc. prior to swimming. Pledges can be a 'flat amount' or can be a certain amount per length, and they can collect the money either before or following the Swim-A-Thon.
The funds raised this year will go towards three separate groups.
BAC gets much of the money raised. Typically, this money is earmarked for something "special", not just our general funds. In the past the money has gone towards UV Light systems at our practice pools, scoreboard improvements where we host meets, and practice equipment.
Besides benefitting BAC, some of the money raised stays within the swim community and goes to the USA swimming Foundation - the charitable arm of USA Swimming. This organization does support our country's elite athletes, but the majority of the funds they raise go towards lessons and learn-to-swim programs for underserviced communities.
Traditionally BAC has also donated a portion of the funds raised toward a worthy charitable cause. In the past we've been proud to raise money for The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, and the Shelly Glover Fund among others. Last year we donated money to Camp Kesem, an organization that provides a summer camp experience to children whose lives have been touched by cancer.
This year we're honored to donate to a cause that has recently affected our extended BAC family -Alzheimer's research. This past summer we lost a former BAC Coach -Jack Pettinger - after a brief battle with Alzheimer's. Jack was a legend in the Madison swim community and well respected nationally amongst coaches. In addition to his work with BAC, Jack was most known as the UW Men's Team Coach for over 2 decades. He was a mentor and friend to so many of us, and we're happy to be celebrating his life and raising money in his name.
There are a number of great reasons for your swimmer to raise money for the Swim-A-Thon, beyond supporting the great causes. First, all donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Second, swimmers that raise money are eligible to earn great prizes! So many of the prizes for the Swim-A-Thon are unique and special, and can only be earned through SAT and not purchased from Simply Swimming. Check out the attached flyer for a full breakdown of each prize level. BAC practice groups that raise enough money will also be treated to a free PIZZA PARTY sometime in February. And finally, the top earner for BAC gets to donate $500 in their name to a charity of their choice!
Funds can be raised via cash, check (payable to BADGER AQUATICS CLUB) or, probably the easiest, electronically through our TU website. Go to the front of our web and click the link for more directions. Prize money can be collected beforehand or up until January 31st.
The event itself is a SUPER fun time, with music, fun and games, and Noodles and Company for dinner!
Historically, our Swim-A-Thon has often raised a total amount between $25,000 and $30,000. Last year was one of our most successful years, with $32,000 raised. Our goal for this year is to top $35,00 for the first time. Go BAC!
Also pledges must be turned and prizes ordered in by Jan31st .
Prizes will be distributed at Regional Meet (or possibly sooner)
Note: The largest prize (sweatshirt lined coat) will be available the night of swim-a-thon to try on for sizing or for the Baraboo team and others that achieve later will be available at the Jan. 27th meet (Groundhog).
