Time Standards

Missouri Valley is a league of teams which falls under the main USA swimming umbrella. Missouri Valley has two sessions per year: short course and long course. Short course is a 25 yard pool (frequently indoors). The short course session starts around September and ends in March (fall/winter). Long course is a 50 meter pool and teh session runs from April to August (spring/summer). There are different time standards and meet qualifying times for each course.

USA swimming has several different gauges with which swimmers can measure their speed. Some of the standards overlap and some complement each other. The ones that have been around the longest and are the most comprehensive are the motivational time standards which is broken down into A, B, and C categories.  ‘C’ is the slowest, moving up to B, then BB, then A onto AA, AAA, culminating at AAAA.

Another frequently used time standard is broken down into Divisions: I & II.  These are separate from the motivational times (above). Division II times are in general right below a “B”  time and no faster than A times for 12 and under. 13 and over the Division I times are between A-AA times. There are two Division meets per year, each with its own time standards, one in short course and one in long course.  Short course Divisions are in Feb/March and long course Divisions are in July/August. Both meets are the around the conclusion of each session (short and long). Teams within the Missouri Valley are invited to these meets.

Missouri Valley Championship Time Standards

Other time standards are generally faster than the D-I & D-II standards and correspond with specific higher level meets. The prime examples are Zones, Pro-Am, Sectionals, Junior Nationals, and Nationals.

Zones qualifying times/eligibility: Swimmers must have achieved AAA times (LCM, SCM, SCY) in the 12 months since the previous Zone meet in their age group for competition. Zones are one time per year, in very early August.
