Practice Group Criteria - (updated Aug 2017)
Tidal Wave – 8 and under “novice” swimmers. Can do front crawl and backstroke for at least 25 yards. Can dive safely from the side of the pool; Push and glide from wall on front and back; can tread water with arms only; open turns; rotary breathing to either side in freestyle. This group will work on learning/ improving butterfly and breaststroke, learning racing starts and flip-turns. One goal of the group is to complete a 100 yard IM.
Typhoon – 10 and under “novice” swimmers; can complete 6x50s of the following: Free, Back, Breast and Kick. Can dive safely from the blocks; can complete a 100 IM with legal turns. This group will work on improving butterfly and breaststroke, increasing freestyle endurance, improving racing starts and turns. One goal of the group will be to complete a 200 yard IM.
Bronze - 11-12 year old swimmers who can swim all 4 strokes. These swimmers will work to improve their strength and endurance in all strokes and starts and turns. They are striving for Junior 1/Junior 2 training times and competition times. These swimmers are in their first or second year of competitive swimming. One goal for this group is to complete 100 yards in each of the 4 competitive strokes.
Junior 1 – 12 and under “intermediate” swimmers; They have completed at least one season of competitive swimming; can complete all skills in previous level plus can complete a 200 IM with legal turns, 6x50 kick @ 1:10 and 6x50 Free @ 1:00.
Junior 2 – 12 and under “intermediate” swimmers; Can complete the following sets: 4x200 IM @ 3:45, 7x100 kick @ 2:10, 10x100 Free @ 1:45; Has competed in the following events in a YMCA or USA sanctioned meet: 100 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breast, 100 Fly, 200 IM.
Junior Varsity – 13-14 year old swimmers who are working toward Junior 3 qualifying times and practice sets. 3-5 training sessions per week 60-120 minutes.
Junior 3 – 11-14 year old “advanced” swimmers; these swimmers have at least two years of competitive swimming experience; Can complete the following sets: 6x200 IM @ 3:40, 8x100 kick @ 2:10, 12x100 Free @ 1:35; has attained the following time standards in a YMCA or USA sanctioned meet (scy, LCM): 100 Free (1:10, 1:20), 100 Back (1:25, 1:35), 100 Breast (1:35, 1:50), 100 Fly (1:25, 1:40), 200 IM (2:55, 3:20)
Varsity – High School aged swimmers who are working on attaining Senior level practice times and competition times. These swimmers have at least one year of competitive swimming experience and are working to attain high school championship qualifying times and local ymca championship qualifying times.
Junior Olympic - 11-14 year old swimmers striving to attain Senior 1 practice and competition standards. These swimmers have at least two years of competitive swimming experience and have attained or are working towards New England Swimming age group time standards. These swimmers attend practice consistently for 40 weeks out of the year and attend all major meets for which they have qualified.
Senior 1 – Swimmers have at least two years of competitive swimming experience. They can train for at least 120 minutes per session and train consistently (with their high school or with this club) 46 weeks of the year. These swimmers are working towards YMCA and NES championship times and attend all major competitions for which they qualify. Can complete the following sets: 6x200 IM @ 3:20, 8x100 kick @ 2:00, 16x100 free @ 1:30; has attained the time standards in the following events in a YMCA or USA sanctioned meet (scy, LCM): 100 Free (1:05, 1:15), 200 Free (2:20, 2:40), 500/400 Free (6:00, 5:20), 1000/800 Free (12:00, 10:40), 1650/1500 Free (19:48, 20:00), 100 Back (1:15, 1:25), 100 Breast (1:25, 1:35), 100 Fly (1:15, 1:25), 200 IM (2:40, 3:00)
Senior 2 – These swimmers train consistently with our club 46 weeks of the year. Swimmers attend all major meets for which they qualify, including team travel meets. These swimmers have attained or are working toward YMCA National time standards. Must complete all events and time standards in Senior 1 group PLUS must have at least 1 National Age Group AA time standard PLUS can complete the following sets (scy): 4x400 IM @ 6:00, 12x100 Kick @ 1:50, 6x400 Free @ 5:20
National – has attained a Junior National Championship time standard in one or more individual events and can complete the following sets: 4x400 IM @ 5:40, 12x100 Kick @ 1:45, 6x400 Free @ 5:00
