WAHOO DIVE TEAM 2021

Covid kept us away in 2020, but we are SO EXCITED to be back for 2021! The Wahoos are looking forward to another fun-filled dive season this summer. We happily welcome back our returning divers and want to extend a warm welcome to anyone age 5-18 who wants to give diving a try. We are always looking for new teammates--and the emphasis at Dive is on having fun and developing skills. All you need is an interest in the sport, a willingness to learn, and the ability to swim the length of the diving well. Additional information about the league is available at https://dive.mynvsl.com.

DIVE TEAM PRACTICES & MEETS DO NOT CONFLICT WITH SWIM TEAM! So if you have a swimmer that might be interested in adding a fun summer sport, please encourage them to TRY DIVE! They’ll be at the pool anyway!

Dues/Registration:
Dues are $170 per diver, $320 for two divers, $450 for three children and $575 for four or more.

Practice Schedule:
Practices begin on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 1. There are two one-hour practices (4-5 pm and 5-6 pm) each afternoon, Monday through Friday until Monday, June 14, when we shift to the mornings (10-11 am and 11-12 am). Divers can attend whichever practice that works for your schedule—they are not separated by age or experience.

Like swim, there are two types of dive meets: A and B.  A meets, held on Tuesdays at 6 pm, require divers to be able to do a front dive and a back dive, plus additional dives depending on age (see specific requirements below). B meets are informal and provide more flexibility for divers at all levels.

(All meet locations, with addresses and maps, can be found at mynvsl.com, along with all official NVSL Diving rules and information)

We'll kick off the season with a practice meet on June 17--a great opportunity for all our divers to see what a meet looks like, and a low-pressure environment for parents to try your hand at table work or judging!  The annual Wally Martin meet, NVSL-wide, is a chance for divers to try an indoor 3m board experience.

To dive in an A meet, the coach will have to decide if a diver qualifies and will let your diver and parent know about eligibility and readiness by the Monday before the Tuesday A meet.  We have three B meets scheduled for the season.  ALL DIVERS are eligible to participate in B Meets.  The following are the NVSL requirements to qualify for an A Meet:

FRESHMAN DIVERS:  ages 10 and under

Must be able to dive a Forward Dive (or forward line-up), Back Dive (or back line-up) and one additional optional dive (or jump).  This optional dive may not be a repeat of the prior dives.

JUNIOR DIVERS: ages 11 and 12

Must be able to do a Forward Dive, a Back Dive, and 2 optional dives, each from a different group of dives.  Total of 4 dives.

INTERMEDIATE DIVERS: ages 13 and 14

Must be able to do a Forward Dive, a Back dive, and 3 optional dives, each from a different group of dives.  Total of 5 dives.

SENIOR DIVERS: ages 15 to 18

Must be able to do a Forward Dive, a Back dive, an Inward dive, and 3 optional dives, each from a different group of dives.  Total of 6 dives.

We Need Volunteers!
At each meet, we need to provide judges, table workers, and certified referees. We also provide the announcer and sell snacks during home meets (though we're not sure if that will continue in 2021 due to Covid). We ask all dive team families to volunteer in some capacity.
NVSL provides clinics to learn how to work at the scoring table, to judge, or to referee. This year, all clinics will have the option of attending in-person or virtually, so it's even easier to make it work!

Table Workers (announcing, recording scores, meet secretary):

  • June 6: 8:30 am @ Arlington Forest

Judging Clinics:

  • June 6: 10 a.m. @ Arlington Forest

  • June 15: 6:30 p.m. @ Truro

  • June 23: 6:30 p.m. @ Camelot

Referee Clinics: (Note that you must have previously served as a judge in order to be a referee; the training is required every two years in order to be able to ref an A meet)

  • June 9: 6:30 p.m. @ Truro

  • June 13: 2 p.m. @ Chesterbrook

Other Info
While most of our team are WCRA members, we will continue to welcome divers from neighboring pools that don’t have their own dive team. WCRA swim team members are welcome (no conflicts with swim events), as are non-swim team members. Divers often wear the WCRA swim team suits for competition, but they are not required.

Tell a friend, bring a friend, and come out to try DIVE this summer!
