MSA Swim Lessons

Summer 2018 Schedule

Each session will consist of seven 30 minute lessons. Your lessons will either be on a Monday/Wednesday schedule or a Tuesday/Thursday schedule. Lessons have a swimmer to instructor ratio of no more than 4/1.

The cost for each lesson session (seven 30 minute lessons) is $55 per swimmer.

Summer Session 1 Dates:

New Swimmer Evaluations | Tuesday May 29th at 5:30 PM

Monday/Wednesday: 5/30, 6/4, 6/6, 6/11, 6/13, 6/18, 6/20

Tuesday/Thursday: 5/31, 6/5, 6/7, 6/12, 6/14, 6/19, 6/21

 

Summer Session 2 Dates:

New Swimmer Evaluations | Monday June 25th at 5:30 PM

Monday/Wednesday: 6/27, 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, 7/18, 7/23, 7/25

Tuesday/Thursday: 6/28, 7/3, 7/5, 7/17, 7/19, 7/24, 7/26

 

Summer session lessons will be held between 5:30-7:30 PM

PLEASE NOTE:  Group Swim Lessons are set scheduled class times.  There are no make-up classes due to personal conflicts.

Private Swim Lessons available by appointment.

DIRECTIONS:  from South National Avenue turn west on Bear Blvd.  Bear Blvd is north of Grand St and south of Cherry St.  Once you are traveling west on Bear Blvd you are on the MSU campus.  Drive past the dorms and the new rec center.  At John Q Hammons Parkway (four way stop) continue straight (the John Q Arena is at this intersection).  HSC is directly behind the John Q arena on the north side of the street.  There is a parking lot on the south side of the street directly across from HSC. 

PARKING:  I suggest parking at a meter, or purchase a MSU commuter pass to park in this lot. (Note:  this lot is closed during BB games).  To purchase a permit you will need to go to the parking administration office on Cherry Street next to the Springfield Police Substation. They are open from 8-4:30 on Weekdays.   Identify yourself as a parent of a MSA swimmer, to bypass answering class and semester questions from security.

ENTRANCE:  As you face HSC from the parking lot you will see the main lobby door entrance with "Swimming and Diving" above the doors. In the event that these doors are locked for any reason (school holiday, etc.), you may enter through the metal side door to the left.

Beginner I objectives:
  • enter and exit water independently
  • Comfortable in water with instructor
  • Submerge face/head for 5 seconds
  • Submerge face/head and blow bubbles
  • Retrieve submerged object
  • Supported and unsupported front float for 5 seconds
  • Supported and unsupported front glide 
  • Supported and unsupported back float for 5 seconds
  • Supported and unsupported back glide
  • Flutter kick holding onto wall
  • Flutter kick with kickboard
  • Flutter kick on back
Beginner II objectives:
  • Submerge face/head for 10 seconds blowing bubbles
  • Flutter kick with kickboard 1 length
  • Submerges face and blows bubbles while kicking with kickboard
  • Unsupported front glide with kick 
  • Unsupported back glide with kick
  • Kick on side with one arm extended with and without kickboard
  • Swim freestyle 1 length with introduction to side breathing
  • 10 yards streamline kick on stomach
  • 10 yards streamline kick on back
  • Tread water for 15 seconds
Team Prep I objectives
  • 1 length freestyle breathing to side
  • 1 length backstroke with good body position
  • 1 length breaststroke kick with kickboard
  • 1 length breaststroke swim with legal pull and kick
  • 1 length dolphin kick
  • 1 length flutter kick on side
  • 1 length streamline kick on back
  • 5 yards streamline underwater
  • tread water 30 seconds
  • sculling with buoy
Team Prep II objectives:
  • 2 lengths freestyle breathing to side
  • 2 lengths backstroke with good body position
  • 2 lengths breaststroke with legal kick and pull
  • 1 length butterfly with legal kick and pull
  • attempts flipturn
  • head first dive from side
  • 2 lengths streamline kick on back
  • streamline underwater off wall on front
  • streamline underwater off wall on back
  • sculling with buoy
