The SOCAL Aquatics Association offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the SOCAL Aquatics Association to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Entry Level Programs

Sea Turtles 

The Sea Turtles group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 5-8. The main emphasis is on refining the backstroke and freestyle. An introduction to the basics of butterfly, breaststroke, turns and dives will also be given. Practices are offered five days a week for 45-60 minutes. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend three times a week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins and kickboard for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be able to swim 25 yards Freestyle with side breathing

·Be able to swim 25 yards Backstroke with good body position.

·Practice 45-60 minutes 3 times per week recommended.

·Be an enthusiastic learner.

·Competitions optional, but one day meet participation in all SOCAL meets is encouraged.

·Skills Check list for move-ups.

 

Minnows Group

The Minnows group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 8 and under. The main emphasis is on refining the backstroke and freestyle. An introduction to the basics of butterfly, breaststroke, turns and dives will also be given. Practices are offered five days a week for 60 minutes. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend three times a week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins and kickboard for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be able to swim 25 yards Freestyle with side breathing.

·Be able to swim 25 yards Backstroke with good body position.

·Practice 60 minutes 3 times per week recommended.

·Be an enthusiastic learner.

·3 Red Times in 3 different events and must be legal in all 4 strokes from an Age Group Swim Meet.

·Competitions optional, but one day meet participation in all SOCAL meets is encouraged.

Black 2 Group

The Black 2 group is an introductory program for new and continuing swimmers ages 9-10. Not only is the emphasis on backstroke and freestyle, but also on getting the swimmers legal in butterfly and breast strokes. Swimmers will be introduced to turns and dives, and learn how to use a pace clock. Practices are offered five days a week for 1 hour. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend at least twice per week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins and a kickboard for use during practices.

Criteria:
     ·Be able to swim 25 yards Freestyle with side breathing.
     ·Be able to swim 25 yards Backstroke with good body position.
     ·Practice 60 minutes 2-3 times per week.
     ·Be an enthusiastic learner.

Pre Senior 3 Group

The Pre Senior 3 group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 11-13. Not only is the emphasis on refining the backstroke and freestyle, but also on getting the swimmers legal in the butterfly and breast strokes. Swimmers will be introduced to turns, dives as well as how to use the pace clock. Practices are offered five days a week for 1 hour 15 minutes. Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend at least twice per week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins and kickboard for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be able to swim 25 yards Freestyle with side breathing

·Be able to swim 25 yards Backstroke with good body position.

·Practice 1 hour 15 minutes 3 times per week.

·Be an enthusiastic learner.

Continuing Programs

Pre Senior 2 Group

The Pre Senior 2 Group is an introductory level program for new and continuing swimmers ages 11-13 who have learned the basic skills of Freestyle and Backstroke. The emphasis is on refining the Backstroke and Freestyle, but also on getting the swimmers legal in the Butterfly and Breast strokes. Swimmers will be introduced to turns, dives as well as how to use the pace clock Practices will consist of approximately 50% Technique and 50% Aerobic training. One hour and Thirty minutes workouts will be offered five times a week and some Saturdays. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend at least 3 practices per week. Swimmers will be asked to purchase fins, kick boards and pull buoys for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be at least 11 years old

·Be able to swim 25 yards Freestyle with side breathing

·Be able to swim 25 yards Backstroke with good body position.

·Can swim 8 x 50 yard Freestyle on 1:00 interval.

·Practice 1 hour 30 minutes 3 times per week.

·Competes at swim meets at least one per quarter and SOCAL Meets.

Senior 3 Group

The Senior 3 Group is designed for continuing swimmers ages 13-18 who have learned the basic skills of all four competitive strokes. Swimmers will also demonstrate a basic understanding of turns, starts and the use of the pace clock. This group will be introduced to more advanced practice drills and race strategies. Focus will be on achieving Red, Blue, Invite and JO time standards. Practices will consist of approximately 50% Technique and 50% Aerobic training. One hour and Thirty minutes workouts will be offered five times a week and some Saturdays. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend at least 3 practices per week. Swimmers will be asked to purchase fins, kick boards and pull buoys for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be at least 13 years old

·Be legal in all four competitive strokes, can swim a 200 IM

·Can swim 8 x 100 yard Freestyle on 1:40 interval.

·Practice 1 hour 30 minutes 3 times per week.

·1 Red Time from an Age Group Swim Meet.

·Competes at swim meets at least one per quarter and SOCAL Meets.


Elite Programs

Black 1 Group

The Black Group is designed for continuing swimmers ages 8-10 who have learned the basic skills of all four competitive strokes and have predominately Red times. Swimmers will also demonstrate a basic understanding of turns, starts and the use of the pace clock. This group will be introduced to more advanced practice drills and race strategies. Focus will be on achieving, Blue, Invite and JO time standards. Practices will consist of approximately 50% Technique and 50% Aerobic training. 1.5 hour practices will be offered five times a week and some Saturdays. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend 3-4 practices per week. Swimmers are asked to purchase a pair of fins and kickboard for use during practices.

Criteria:

·Be 8-10 years old

·Be legal in all four competitive strokes, can swim a legal 100 IM

·Practice 1 hour 30 minutes 3 times per week is required.

·9-10 year olds need to have 3 Red Times from Age Group Swim Meet

·8 year olds need to have 3 Blue Times from Age Group Swim Meet in 50’s and 100’s

​ OR Swimmers must be able to complete one of the following practice set 10 x 50 free 1:00, 5 x 100 free 2:00 or 5 x 100 IM 2:30

·Competes at swim meets at least one day each meet and 2 days per meet and all SOCAL meets.

Pre-Senior 1 Group

The Pre Senior 1 Group is designed to enhance the skills of year round competitive swimmers ages 11-12, who show competitive excellence in the four competitive strokes. This group is a select group of athletes recommended by their previous coach based upon experience, age, ability and commitment. Advanced race strategies as well as aerobic and anaerobic training regimes will be used. At this level an education element will be added to the program including goal setting, nutrition, time management and mental race and training strategies. The focus of this group will be on achieving Blue times in all strokes, plus Invite and JO times in the child's superior strokes. Two hour practices will be offered five days a week, with dryland training on two of these days. Swimmers are strongly recommended to attend at least 3 practices per week. Swimmers will be asked to purchase an equipment bag containing a kickboard, fins, paddles, pull buoy, parachute, and ankle weights.

Criteria:

·11-12 years old.

·Swim 8 x 100 Freestyle on 1:30 interval minimum.  1:20 recommended.

·Practice 2 hours at least 3 times per week.

·Have 2 Blue 11-12 times (or at least one 10 & Under JO time)

·Be selected by the coaching staff.

·Have the desire to meet the group commitments.

·Compete in 1 meet per quarter and all SOCAL Meets.

Senior 1 & 2 Groups

The Senior 1 & 2 Groups are designed to enhance the skills of year round competitive swimmers who are proficient in the four competitive strokes. This group is a select group of athletes recommended by their coach based upon experience, age, ability and commitment. Advanced race strategies as well as aerobic and anaerobic training regimes will be used. At this level an education element will be added to the program including goal setting, nutrition, time management, mental strategies and college planning. The focus of this group will be on achieving Invite, JO, Senior Development, Sectional and National time standards. Practices will be offered six days a week and doubles could be introduced during specific training periods. Practice attendance minimums will be decided by the coach on an individual basis. Dry land work will also be introduced. Swimmers will be asked to purchase an equipment bag containing fins, snorkel, kick board, and pull buoy and paddles.

Criteria:

 

The standard for continued participation in the Senior 1 group is a Sectional Qualifying time. 

 

Continued participation in Senior 2 will be as follows:

 

·          A Western Zone Qualifying Standard for those swimmers 15 & up 

·          Two Summer JO Standard for those swimmers 13/14
