ABOUT US

The Newton Sharks Swim Team is swimming this year!

We have temporarily relocated to The Great Divide Campground and Lake Tranquility for the 2019 season.

In our 43rd year the Newton Pool, our home, is closed for repairs this year although we expect to return home for the 2020 season.

Since its inaugural year in 1976, the Newton Sharks Swim Team has been a member of  the Wallkill Valley Swim Conference, a summer recreational program committed to the development of the enjoyment of swimming.

The Newton team was the only pool team in the WVSC until 2004, now the only outdoor pool team in the league. We are fortunate to continue that tradition this year with our practices being held at The Great Divide Campground. Our swimmers will get some extra fun and practice this year competing at Lake Tranquility for our meets.

The Newton Sharks range in age from 5 to 18 and hail from many towns and communities in Sussex County, New Jersey – Newton, Andover, Green, Sparta, Stillwater, Stanhope, Lafayette, Sussex, Wantage among others. The Sharks team unofficially serves as a feeder program to the state qualifying Newton Lenape Valley High School team coached by our very own Jess Jacobellis, who began her own swim career at the age of four with the Lake Tranquility Thunderbolts, also a WVSC team and host to our meets this summer.

Over the course of the average season, Sharks compete in 8 meets – both pools and lakes – and compete in both an invitational and championships all during the month of July. It’s endless swimming and fun, so much so that it feels like the entire summer to our swimmers and their families.

In the middle of July, the Sharks host an annual Northwest Jersey Invitational where hundreds of swimmers will come from teams in both Sussex and Warren counties for a fun day of competition and qualifying times for the WVSC championships. This year’s invitational will be held at Kittatinny Regional High School.

At the end of our five weeks, many Sharks will have qualified to compete in the WVSC championships – another full day of swimming and fun – hosted by Lake Stockholm this year. Many, many awards are earned by our Sharks and our team, which won the WVSC Sportsmanship Award in 2018.
