MINI PUPS (FUNdamentals)

Mini pups is designed to teach children how to swim and provides instruction for those that would like to eventually progress to pre-competitive and competitive swimming.  The swimmers will learn body-awareness in water, develop good body position (the most fundamental and universal skill in competitive swimming), strengthen kick, and learn the basics of freestyle and backstroke.

Pups 1, 2, & 3 Pre-Competitive

Number of practices per week: Two or Three
Daily Training: 45 to 60 Minutes

Pups 1, 2, & 3 are designed to teach children how to swim and to introduce them to competitive swimming. The swimmers learn progressive skills, stroke development and the basics of the four competitive strokes; butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Swimmers are placed in groups with other children of similar age and ability and will progress at their own skill level. Once a child has mastered a competent level of swimming skills they are eligible to move into the competitive groups. 

The goal in the Pups is to teach the following aspects of technique in freestyle, breaststroke  and backstroke:

1. Streamlining
2. Timing & acting of breathing
3. Body stabilization & positioning
4. Starts & turns (introduce)
5. Sculling patterns & techniques

 

The swimmers also learn body undulation and dolphin kick for butterfly

Pups 4 Competitive Transition

Number of practices per week: Four
Daily Training: 60 to 90 Minutes

The Pups 4 group is designed as a transition group for young swimmers moving from the "Learn To Swim" program of the Pups 1 to 3 groups over to the Competitive Group. This group is considered a competitive group but the young swimmers are able to compete in select pre-competitive level swim meets as well as select competitive level swim meets.

The Junior competitive groups are the first stage into our competitive program. The main emphasis of this program is to improve stroke technique, fitness, overall body strengthening and coordination. Younger swimmers will be introduced to the training tools they will be required to advance. As mentioned above as the swimmer’s ability and age increase, the number of practices  and the duration of practices will also increase

Basic goals: sculling drills, improved technique, learn drill progressions, begin aerobic development, improve kicking, work on starts/turns, develop a positive attitude about distance and trying new events. The junior groups also incorporate dryland training on a weekly basis.

The senior competitive groups follow the junior competitive program in our competitive stream. The main emphasis of this program is to continue the improve stroke technique, fitness, overall body strengthening and coordination. Admittance into the senior groups is based upon completion of junior stroke drill test, timed 300 metre kick set of 6:15, 10 x 50 metre free swimming under 1:00, 200 metre IM time of 3:30 (short course), attendance of 80% or better proven meet experience and lastly at the coaches discretion.

Basic goals: aerobic build up emphasis on 200’s stroke, distance free and IM, learn refined race tactics, intro dryland , intro to stroke tempo, train all four strokes, continued kick strengthening.
