Swim Groups

The West Florida Lightning Aquatic Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the WFLA to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Bronze:  This is our introductory group of our year round team.  It is for beginning swimmers who can swim 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke, but need additional instruction on each of the four competitive strokes.  It meets twice per week, for 45 minutes each session. 

Practices: Tuesday/ Thursday 4:30 - 5:15 p.m.

Coaching Fees: $60/month

Equipment Needed: suit, cap, goggles

Silver :  Our Silver group is for swimmers who can swim all four strokes.  It is focused on technique, and learning starts and turns.  This group meets four days per week for an hour each session.

Short Course Schedule: Monday through Thursday 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Coaching Fees: $65/month

Equipment Needed: cap, goggles, kickboard, pull buoy, Mesh bag for equipment

Gold Group: The focus of the Gold groups remains on teachnique, starts, turns and on learning racing strategies.  This group starts working on interval training, and swimmers will be asked to learn to read the pace clock. 
 Practice Schedule: Monday through Thursday 4:45 - 6:30 p.m.

Coaching Fees: $80/month

Equipment Needed: Cap, Goggles, Kickboard, Pull Buoy, Paddles, Swim Snorkle, Fins, Mesh bag for equipment

Junior Group: From the Gold group, athletes move into this group. Athletes in this group are usually at least 10 years old and have completed the Gold Group move-up skills list. This group consists of 7 workouts offered each week with dryland training 6x per week.  Competing at swim meets is highly encouraged at a rate of about once per month.
 Short Course Schedule: Monday through Friday 4:45 - 7:00 (dryland 4:45 - 5:15/ swim 5:15 - 7:00 p.m.) then Saturday a.m. 7:30 - 9:45 a.m.

Coaching Fees: $105/ month

Equipment Needed: Cap, Goggles, Fins, Paddles (green strokemaker #1), Buoy, Kickboard, Mesh Bag, running shoes daily

Senior Group: This group is for members of the Junior Group that are in high school.  It meets 7 practices per week and does 6 days of dryland training. 

Short Course Practice Schedule: Monday through Friday 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. (dryland included)

Coaching Fees: $105/ month

Equipment Needed: Cap, Goggles, Fins, Paddles (strokemaker #1's), Buoy, Kickboard, Mesh bag, running shoes daily

National Team: This group is typically for high school age athletes.  Athletes entering the National Team must display a strong desire to perform at the highest level they are capable of. Training is geared towards individual talents, although a strong aerobic endurance factor is present. Athletes in the National Team have goals that include competing on the National level and/or preparing to swim collegiately. There are attendance requirements for this group, and only the highly committed athletes will be offered an opportunity to swim with this group.

Short Course Training Schedule: Monday through Friday afternoons 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. (dryland included), Monday and Friday a.m. swim 5;00 - 6:15 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday a.m. 5:00 - 6:15 weights, Saturday a.m. 7:30 - 9:45 a.m.

Coaching Fees: $125/ month

Equipement Needed: Cap, Goggles, Fins, Paddles (strokemaker #1's), Buoy, Kickboard, Speedo training snorkle, Band for pulling, Mesh bag, running shoes daily

High School Conditioning: This group is for the high school seasonal athlete who wishes to stay conditioned between high school swimming seasons.

Short Course Training Schedule (November through May) 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday

Coaching Fees: $70/month
