Lifeguard Classes will be taught this spring at the Rochester Recreation Center.

Session 1:  April 27 - 29 (Friday 4:00pm-8:00pm, Saturday 8:00am-4:00pm, AND Sunday 8:00am-4:00pm)

These courses will run as a Lifeguarding Blended Learning Intensive; meaning, the reading and videos will be done at student's pace outside of the classroom.

This course trains students in the American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer training. Learn the skills you will need to work at a pool . Upon successful completion participants will receive a Lifeguard, First Aid,CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate valid for two years. Be prepared to be both in and out of the water each day of class. Bring pencil and paper, swimsuit, warm clothes and towels each day.  Students should bring snacks and drinks for the long days.

Students must be 15 years old by the last day of the class and successfully complete and pass the precourse swim skills. Swim skill evaluation (prerequisites listed below) will be done first thing on the first day.  

Prerequisites:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating rhythmic breathing and breath control.  Candidates can use front crawl, breaststroke, or combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs; hands must be under armpits.

3.  Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:  Start in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke (no goggles can be used), surface dive head or feet first 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point on your back, with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
