Head Coach Ricky Silva
Ricky Silva began coaching in 1991 in Southern California while attending Cal State Fullerton. Upon moving back to the Bay Area following college, he coached at several teams in the Bay Area over the last 20 plus years. Ricky was the head age group coach from 1995-2001 at SOLO aquatics in Menlo Park. Ricky worked primarily with 12 and under swimmers as well as the summer league team.
He started coaching at Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics in 2001. While at PASA, he was part of a staff that formed a team that would grow to be over 1,200 competitive swimmers and a Gold Medal club. Ricky was the Head Age group coach at the Rinconada site. While at PASA, he coached a wide range of swimmers, from novice to top 16 in the country. Swimmers in his group have achieved sectional, Junior National, National and Olympic Trials times.
Ricky moved to the Santa Clara Swim Club as a Performance Coach. During his time at SCSC, swimmers that he coached achieved Far Western, Sectionals and USA Winter Junior time standards. Five swimmers were invited to attend the USA Western zone select camp. SCSC has been a USA swimming Gold Medal club the past two years.
Ricky was active in Pacific Swimming and USA swimming. Ricky was awarded the Pacific Swimming Age Group coach of the year in 2012. He has attended the national select age group coaches camp (2012 and 2014) at the Olympic Training Center, assisted at the Western Zone select camp at the University of Utah and has coached on several Pacific Swimming All Star teams and camps. He was the Age Group Chair for Pacific Swimming for two years.
Coach Bob Southward
Bob Southward's name is synonymous with Northern California swimming. He has coached in the area for over 35 years. Bob began coaching with the legendary Sherm Chavoor at Arden Hills, who coached such Olympic Champions as Debbie Meyer, Mark Burton, and Mark Spitz. Bob has coached all level of swimmers, from National to Age Group. Currently, he enjoys coaching younger swimmers from beginner to intermediate, teaching the basics of the four strokes and perfecting technique at an early age. Bob also runs Southward Swim School at his home swimming pool in the summer, which has the reputation of being the premier Swim School in Solano County. To watch Bob coach is a lot of fun, and many of the parents stay on deck during practice just to see him in action.
Coach Gabi Arca
Gabriella graduated from Vanden High School in June 2014. Although Vanden does not have an official swim team, she played varsity tennis all four years. As an extracurricular activity, Gabriella swam for the Vacaville Swim Club since from 2007 to 2014. She is currently attending Solano Community College. Gabi swam for Solano in the spring of 2015 and was awarded “Swimmer of the Year” by the college. Over the summer of 2015 she taught swim lessons at Solano Community College and is back to the water as a swim coach for SASO.
Coach Justin Lomas
Justin is coaching our Age Group Elite group. He grew up in Fairfield where he participated in club swimming from the age of 6 to 18- he learned how to swim from no other than fellow SASO Cach Bob Southward. He is a graduate of Fairfield High where he was a student athlete, amassing multiple school and league records. Thereafter, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College, also receiving multiple distinctions: All-American, Big 8 Conference Swimmer of the Year, CCCAA State Champion. After Santa Rosa, he went onto transfer to the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating with honors. As a swimmer, Justin specialized in IM and mid-distance races, but he has experience coaching a variety of swimmers aged 4-18 in a variety of events. Justin is very excited to get to know his swimmers, and help them achieve their goals.
Coach Courtney Ridens
Knowing since kindergarten that she would dedicate her life to working with kids, Courtney has become well-known in Solano County and the East Bay for her enthusiasm in the classroom and on the pool deck. Swimming on various recreational, club, and Masters teams throughout her life, Courtney learned many lessons and received ample advice from passionate coaches during her 13-year swim career. Coaching and teaching swim lessons for the last eight years, she has passed on these advisements to hundreds of swimmers ranging in all abilities at Rancho Solano, Green Valley Country Club, Sherman Swim School, and now - as she returns to SASO for the first time since 2009 to work with the newest generation of goal-oriented swimmers.
Studying in the Teachers for Tomorrow program at Saint Mary's College of California, Courtney has worked with a wide range of students; from placements in the Title I schools of inner-city Oakland and Concord to Orinda and Walnut Creek's most elite day schools, she has never ceased to enjoy every minute of her time with students. Returning home after graduation in 2014, Courtney is now a certificated substitute teacher in Napa Valley School District while preparing to enter the Multiple-Subject Credential program at Sonoma State University in the fall of 2016. Upon completion of her credential, Courtney's ultimate goal is to remain a swim coach and teach a fourth grade class in Napa.
