Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Byron Trajan

Hey! This is my second season as head coach of the Breakers, and I'm very excited about the club and what we're doing. Having grown up on Vancouver Island and coached swimming for many years with the White Rapids Summer Swim Club in Nanaimo, as well as being involved with both triathlon and basketball, I believe in having fun, being outdoors whenever possible and participating in many different sports and activities.

Assistant Head Coach: Courtney Poulin

This is my second season with the Breakers and I am so excited to be working with this club!  Every time I am at the pool, I know that something fun will happen- whether it's our Swimbits learning something new or our senior swimmers breaking pool records!  I love coming to the pool everyday because I know I will be laughing and having a blast the whole practice.  When I am not at the pool, I am teaching my students at Cedar Elementary where I currently have a grade 7 class.   I have been lucky enough to work with some great clubs, such as the Nanaimo White Rapids and the Nanaimo Diamonds, and I hope to bring all my knowledge to the Ravensong Breakers!

Senior Coach: Sydney Raduy

Swimming has always been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. The Ravensong Breakers have been my family for the past 8 years. I started swimming with the team in Grade 4 and ended my competitive swimming career in Grade 10. I swam very competitively in my last 3 years of being on the team, swimming in the top group, known as "Gold" and having the chance to go on an unforgettable training camp in Coronado, San Diego! As well as swimming at meets like Vancouver Island Regional Championships and Double A meets all over the Province! Unfortunately, I underwent two spinal operations causing me to stop swimming competitively for a year.  Not being able to swim at the high level I was used to during my recovery was extremely difficult... but having that year off to recover soon led me to become a volunteer coach for the younger groups on the team. I decided to retire from swimming and continue coaching as I found that to be my new passion. I've always loved children and their energy, so teaching them to swim competitively on a team, I felt, was perfect. Especially as it will help my future goal as I hope to one day pursue a career as a Paediatrician! The Breakers have taught me countless lessons and have given me countless amounts of memories that I will remember forever. This team is truly special. Hope to see you in the water!

Junior Coach: Haley Bennett

Hey! This is my fourth year volunteer coaching with the Ravensong Breakers, and you can find me helping out with the Bronze Select group or hopping in with Gold. I'm so happy to be part of such a special team! I started swimming with the club in 2008 and grew up coming to our pool everyday. RAC is like home to me! At my highest level in the sport, I was a distance swimmer with Senior National (CSC) qualifications in the 400m and 800m freestyle and World Championship Trials qualifications in the 1500m freestyle. I have also spent time coaching the Nanaimo White Rapids Summer Swim Club with coach Byron and Courtney. If I'm not coaching or swimming, you can find me teaching swim lessons or lifeguarding at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre.

I love swimming, and all it offers. My goal as a coach is to provide a fun, safe and energetic learning environment for my swimmers; the same environment I experienced growing up in the Breakers.

Junior Coach: Alex Roberts

Hi! I’m Alex, and I am a junior coach for Ravensong Aquatic Club. I have been with the club for eight years, and have been coaching on a volunteer basis for two. Swimming has been such a huge part of my life for so long, and I really want to inspire the same passion I have for it in younger swimmers. When I swam in the highest competitive level in the club, I was a national level distance swimmer, competed in the 2014 BC Summer Games, and travelled to Winnipeg, and San Francisco to compete at high level swim meets. Because of competitive swimming, I became interested in lifeguarding, and so now, after completing all of my (extensive) certifications, I also work at Ravensong Aquatic Centre as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Even though I have stepped down in swimming for the club, I still love the sport, and the things that it teaches. Hope to see you at the pool!
