VARSITY AND JV SWIM TEAM
Karakung has a JV and Varsity Swim Team for kids ages 5 to 19 years old. We have a long history of participating in the Delco Swim League. Karakung is proud to be part of the “A” league, swimming against cross town rivals Lawrence Park as well as Springfield, Knowlton and Lansdowne. In 2009, 2011 and 2013, Karakung was the “A” league champion and in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015 we tied for 2nd place. Members of the swim team (12 and under) participate in JV meets on Wednesday nights. The entire team is eligible to participate in Varsity meets on Saturday mornings, which are very spirited, fun and exciting. Practice is held 5 afternoons a week after school and once school lets out we swim 5 mornings a week at Karakung for every age group 8-18. Whether you are the best swimmer on the team, or just starting out, being a part of the KSC swim team is an exciting, fun, and rewarding experience. Come out and give it a try!
2018 Afterschool practices begin on May 29, 2018. Younger swimmers (mostly 10 and under) will swim from 4-5pm and Older swimmers (mostly 12 and older) will practice 5-6pm (these times may be adjusted). Practice times may be adjusted based on swimmers skill level. Morning Practices begin June 18th. There are three swim practices depending on ability and age: 8:15-9:00am 8:45-9:45am, 9:30-11:00am.
Mini Swim Team:
Mini Team is a developmental swim program for children 8 years and younger. The main focus is on improving the technique of the swimmer’s strokes (focus is on freestyle and backstroke), as well as learning the fundamental swimming elements such as streamlining and starting off the blocks. The main goal for Mini team is to prepare for swimmers for a race in a swim meet.
Swimmers must be able to swim one lap of the pool with rotary arm movements in order to be on Mini Swim Team. The kids practice Monday through Friday for 4-5 weeks from 11:00 to 11:30am or 11:30 to 12 noon, depending on their swimming level starting on June 21st. The season culminates with our annual “Mini Meet” held at Karakung on a Sunday, July 15, 2018. Some mini swimmers will have the opportunity to swim in a JV meet during the season based on their progress and development. Mini team assessments are on June 20th.

KSC DIVE TEAM
John Scholtz will be back as our head diving coach. John coached diving at Haverford High School from 2005-2014. He was a diver at Knowlton, Penncrest and the University of Delaware. Emily Wolfe will join John to assist with the dive team.
The Varsity Diving team is a competitive team that represents Karakung in meets against other teams in the Delco League. After school practices begin on May 30th. Older divers will practice 4-5pm and younger divers will practice 5-6pm. Starting on June 20th we practice Monday through Friday mornings in two sessions, from 8:30-9:30 and from 9:30-10:30. Meets are on Tuesdays evenings with a start time of 6:00. We have an extremely large team and not every diver can compete in every meet. Divers are chosen to compete in meets based on ability and on fairness; every diver will have the chance to compete in at least one meet in the season.
The Mini Diving team is a developmental group where children of any age learn the basic skills needed in springboard diving. The divers learn forwards and backwards hurdles followed by different jumps and dives, such as tuck jumps, front dives, back dives, and flips. We practice in two sessions, from 10:30-11:00 and from 11:00-11:30 on Mondays through Fridays. We have a “Mini Meet” at the end of the season to show off everything that the divers have learned. When the divers have mastered enough dives, they move to the Varsity Diving team to compete against other clubs.
First day for mini divers will be on June 21, 2017. at 10:30 AM.
