Parent Commitment & Job Assignment

Parent commitment through volunteering and fund raising activities are key to the success of any Sierra Marlin swimmer. It is one of the most rewarding experiences parents provide to show their support for their children.

Swimming year starts in August. The number of volunteer hours is assessed each year and is subject to change. Currently, each family is assigned (30) volunteer commitment hours. The majority of hours are fulfilled through required participation in the 3 hosted meets that SMST sponsor. Other opportunities to fulfill commitment hours are available through various SMST events.

Note: **You are required to fulfill your parent commitment even if your child chooses not to swim in meets.

Parent Commitment Hours:

Parent commitment hours are set each year in August.  Volunteer commitment hours are assigned to each family (30) to be used as part volunteering to support SMST hosted event excluding Timing at Away Meets. Failure to complete your parent commitment hours will result in automatic billing of any shortage of hours at $50/hour. If you are unable to work a scheduled meet, you must call the parent commitment coordinator to discuss other options. In lieu of working your shifts, you also have the option of “buying out” a 4 hour shift for $100. (This arrangement and payment must be made 2 weeks prior to the meet.) Each shift that is bought out will earn the equivalent of 4 team points.

SMST Hosted Swim Meets:

The Marlins host 3 major meets per swim year. All families are required to work at these meets regardless of swimmer participation. Our biggest meets are the Annual Gobbler (Nov.), Spring Splash (April), and a winter meet (March). Depending on the meet, 1-2 shifts (3-4 hours each) will be required. These meets are a substantial portion of our fundraising efforts each year.

Timing at Away Meets:

Each team that attends a meet is expected to provide timers based upon the number of swimmers they bring to the meet. Each family is required to time at the meets when their swimmer is participating. Sign-ups are done online before the meet. This is not a part of the 30 hour volunteer commitment.

Signing up for swim jobs is where majority of the volunteer hours are used. Additional volunteer opportunities are provided for other SMST events such as: Open Water Swim, Senior Meet and the annual Community Fireworks Booth. Job assignments are based on the number of resources needed per committee. We will make every attempt to assign and match your job preference.
