Alum Creek (T1)
This was our team's first regatta of the season and it went very well. All of our sailors had a good time and were respectful of their equipment and competitors. Launching/rigging the thistle was a challenge but will improve in the future regattas. This was most likely due to the complicated launching circumstances of Alum Creek state park. Our sailors performed well but have plenty of ambition left for future regattas. Special S/O to Molly P for placing 2nd overall in Opti gold.
Saturday June 15th, 2018 VBC traveled to Erie Yacht Club in Erie, PA. One of the youngest sailors on the team, Molly Petrigan, competed in the Opti Gold Fleet placing 4th in the Blue division, adding to her second place last week. In the 420 fleet we had a rookies to the boat Ellen Petrigan and Meagan Rini competing together. They had a top 10 finish in a race and finished an impressive 15th out of 33. Vermilion had an excellent showing in the Laser Radial Fleet, having 5 sailors compete. Veteran Molly Gregory finished 2nd overall missing 1st place by one point. Molly finished with all top 5 finishes showing her consistency in the fleet. The teams next Regatta will be in Edgewater on Wednesday June 20th. As a team our tactics are looking more and more sound, but we need to get back to the basics like working on roll tacking and mark roundings.
Wednesday June 20th, 2018 the Vermilion race team traveled to Edgewater Yacht club to compete in the teams third regatta of the season. The breeze was very challenging and started off incredibly light which many of our sailors did well in. Towards the end of the day, the breeze filled in and the final race was in bigger breeze. We are very proud of our sailor's getting into the harbor safely and efficiently. We are still having trouble with our starts and roll tacks, and identifying mid-line sag. VBC did very well in the laser fleet, one of the best showings we have had in years. Nick K finished 2nd, Maggie S finished 3rd, and Molly G finished 6th overall. Kaden K got 1st in opti green and our 420 finished 15th overall. Very strong showing from team VBC, lets keep it up at Junior Olympics.
Junior Olympics (MHYC)
Junior Olympics was held at Mentor Yacht Club. The breeze was very challenging and light to say the least. The 420s ran 3 races, with Ben Rini and Fionn Kline placing 5th overall. The laser fleet had a tough day as well with Nick K losing a controversial protest. Team VBC with another impressive showing, on to the next one.
Opti Great Lakes (green fleet)
Vermilion had an awesome turnout in the Opti Green fleet for Great Lakes. We had Cole Rini, Eli Barker, and Zoe Kline which made up 50% of the entire green fleet. The first day of racing had challenging breeze that was on the heavy side and very shifty. Our sailors did a great job of staying on the breeze and recognizing shifts when they happened. The second day was very light, but equally as shifty. Eli and Cole tied for first at awards, with Cole winning the tie breaker. Zoe raced every race the second day and showed so much potential for Great Lakes being her first ever opti regatta. Team vbc with another excellent regatta!
