Swim Groups

It is the goal of WAKE aquatics to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

GROUP STRUCTURE

WAKE FOUNDATIONS (Ages 5 - 14)

Pre-requisite: Must be able to swim one length (25 yards) of the pool demonstrating freestyle or backstroke staying horizontal from head to toe.

This is the first level of competitive swimming and is for beginning swimmers just out of swim lessons.  Beginners will learn about the four competitive strokes and will work toward introduction to competitive swimming.  Swimmers will have two sessions per week.  Progression to the next level will be one of three groups specific to the swimmers age (Wake 5, Wake 4, Wake 3).

WAKE 5 GROUP LEVELS 2 & 1 (Ages 10 & Under)

Pre-requisite: Must be able to complete all requirements of Wake Foundations.

Swimmers in these groups have some competitive swimming experience.  The focus of this group is to refine and continue to develop the swimmer's skills toward advancement to the next levels.  Conditioning and endurance training are also introduced. Swimmers are encouraged to attend three to four 90 minute practices per week.  Swimmers will generally compete in Wake hosted and other local meets and may choose to participate in one or two travel meets three hours or less drive from Birmingham.  As with Wake Foundations, Wake 4 and Wake 3, swimmers' other activities such as soccer, baseball, dance and track are encouraged. Advancement to the next level will be to either the next level of Wake 5 or to Wake 4 groups.

WAKE 4 GROUP LEVELS 2 and 1 (Ages 10 - 12)

Pre-requisites: Must be able to complete all requirements of Wake Foundations or advance from Wake 5 Groups

The focus of this group is to refine and continue to develop the swimmer's skills.  Conditioning and endurance  training are also introduced.  Swimmers will be offered four to six workouts per week depending on skill level, age and level of commitment.  Swimmers will generally participate in Wake hosted and other local meets and may choose to participate in one or two travel meets. As with Wake Foundations, Wake 5 and Wake 3, swimmers' other activities such as soccer, baseball, dance and track are encouraged.  Advancement to the next level will be to either the next level of Wake 4 or Wake 3.

WAKE 3 GROUP LEVELS 2 and 1 (Ages 12 - 14)

Pre-requisites: Must be able to complete all requirements of Wake Foundations or advance from Wake 4 Groups

The focus of this group is to refine and continue to develop the swimmer's skills.  Conditioning and endurance training are also introduced.  Swimmers will be offered four to six workouts per week depending on skill level, age and level of commitment.  Swimmers will generally participate in Wake hosted and other local meets and more advanced swimmers generally will participate in one or two travel meets within the LSC. As with Wake Foundations, Wake 5 and Wake 4, swimmers' other activities such as soccer, baseball, dance and track are encouraged.  Advancement to the next level will be to the next level of Wake 3 or Wake 2.

WAKE 2 GROUP LEVELS 2 and 1 (Ages 12 - 18) 

Pre-requisites: Must be able to perform all requirements of Wake Foundations or advance from Wake 3 Groups.

The focus of this group is to refine and continue to develop the swimmer’s skills. Conditioning, endurance training, and racing is the focus for Wake 2 Groups.  This group will generally include high school age swimmers as well as our Age Group Performance groups.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend all scheduled workouts offered each week. Workouts will be 2 ½ hours per day and swimmers will attend between four and six workouts per week depending on levels of commitment and ability. Swimmers will generally attend local meets and travel meets inside the LSC.  More advanced swimmers may attend meets outside the LSC.  Swimmers in this group are still developing their skills to advance to the next level.  Advancement to the next level will be to the next level of Wake 2 or to Wake 1.

WAKE 1 GROUP LEVELS 2 and 1 (Ages 12 - 18)

This group is the next level of advancement for Age Group Performance and for those high school swimmers who wish to pursue swimming at higher levels of competition.  Swimmers in this group will be offered eight to ten workouts per week and are expected to attend all workouts offered.  In this group swimmers will be introduced to more advanced weight training depending on age.Swimmers in this group will compete in local meets, travel meets within the LSC and regional and national meets for which they qualify.
