AMS is a membership organization comprised of clubs, athletes, coaches, officials and individuals working together to promote and administer the sport of swimming in the geographical as described below. AMS provides opportunities for local competition, camps, championships and recognition for its members.
AMS is governed by a board of directors elected by the member clubs through of the AMS House of Delegates (HOD). All member clubs have representation in the HOD.

AMS is the Local Swim Committee (LSC) for USA Swimming covering the counties west of Potter, Clinton, Centre, Huntingdon and Bedford in Pennsylvania; Hancock, Brook, Ohio and Marshall counties in West Virginia; and Columbiana, Jefferson and Belmont counties in Ohio.
AMS is a member of the following governing bodies

- Eastern Zone Swimming - Regional Administrative Body that promotes communication among the 12 members LSCs, provides championship competition for the athletes, and serves as a communication link with USA Swimming. www.easternzoneswimming.org
