It's all about the children and how we can help save lives!
A year in the making, the joint effort of the Brigantine Aquatic Center (BAC), the City of Atlantic City (Mayor and Council), the Atlantic City School Board, the Atlantic City Recreation Program, and the Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City, the BAC is proud to announce the Whelan’s Whales structured swimming lessons program. This program is brought to the youth of Atlantic City by the Make a Splash initiative and the Brigantine Aquatic Center.
Whelan’s Whales is named after the former Atlantic City Mayor & State Senator, Jim Whelan, who was an avid swimmer and a previous Captain of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol.
Swim lessons are taught by the Brigantine Aquatic Center’s swim instructors, coaches, and lifeguards on a volunteer/pay basis at the Martin Luther King School’s pool complex in Atlantic City. The pilot session had an amazing response, which started this past spring and received over 300 applications from all four Atlantic City schools!
During the seven-week pilot period the Brigantine Aquatic Center taught 130 Atlantic City children the basics of water safety and swimming techniques. In just a few short weeks, we have seen unbelievable progress in these children. The community support has been life altering for these children, me, and the Brigantine Aquatic Center Staff.
Our current summer session is under way. If you would like more information on this program for the fall or to talk about becoming a sponsor, please contact our director, Sari Carroll.
