Swim Groups

The Riviera Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Riviera Swim Team to offer age-specific training for all of our athletes geared toward challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

About The Teams

The Riviera Swim Team offers a multi-level organization operating year-round, learn-to-swim programs, as well as competitive swimming that competes at the local, state, regional, and national levels. The competitive team is divided into six groups based on swimmer evaluations and age groups. Levels are as follows:

Recruits – Red coached by Max Ryan, Sally Hasbrook, and Therese Love

This is the beginning competitive squad.  Most of the swimmers in this group have participated in some type of instructional program.  Red Squad is an instructional-based novice group focusing on foundation of four competitive strokes for 6 to 8 year olds. Red Squad usually swims two days per week for 1 hour in evenings and 1 hour on Saturday.  Participants in this level are eligible to participate in meets and are encouraged to attend all Red & Black Friday Night Races. The focus of Red Squad is on stroke technique for all competitive strokes. Participation in two meets is required.

Recruits – Black coached by Emily Young

Black Squad is a group for 7 to 10 year olds, continuing a major emphasis on stroke technique, executing legal turns, and all four strokes, including the Individual Medley (IM), while introducing training components and race strategies.  This group meets three to four times per week for 1 hour.  Equally important is the development of self confidence, self discipline, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Participants will represent the Riviera Swim Team in meets locally and are required to participate in a minimum of two meets per season.  Swimmers begin to understand the correlation between effort and performance and begin to understand time standard progressions.

Bronze coached by Therese Love

Bronze Squad is for 8 to 11 year olds and has a major emphasis on developing aerobic endurance and stroke proficiency.  These swimmers exhibit good swimming skills and begin quality training and conditioning concepts.  They generally participate in monthly competitions.  Bronze Squad membership requires specific skills and a competitive characteristic to fully benefit from the experience.  The swimmer at this level understands that their efforts will improve their performance.  Stroke proficiency is necessary, but continues to be developed.  The swimmer understands Indiana time standards (Divisionals, State, Zones) and wants to compete.  Bronze Squad swimmers swim three to five times per week for 1 hour.

Silver coached by Therese Love and Joe Christoffersen

Silver Squad is for swimmers ages 11 to 14 who have achieved a designated level of success based on effort, practice consistency, meet participation, and time standard achievement.  Swimmers must be 11 during the season.  The swimmers must have stroke proficiency and a commitment level commensurate with training schedule.  They spend their time between stroke technique and training skills, race strategy, and goal setting.  Ongoing character development, practice habits, and teamwork are stressed.   Swimmers strive for multiple Divisional time standards for 11 year olds and State and Zone times for 12 to 14 year old swimmers.  Silver Squad swimmers are offered practices five to six days per week where workouts range from 1 to 1½ hours per day.  Swimmers are eligible to compete in all meets that we enter and are encouraged to participate in prelim/final meets.

Gold coached by Therese Love 

Gold Squad is designed as a bridge from the groups for the 11 to 13 year olds.  Committed 13 & over swimmers strive to make swimming their primary sport. Swimmers are well-versed in technique and strategy and desire to obtain national-level cuts.  They are also a full-fledged training group specifically working toward season goals, which include developing a good work ethic, understanding complex training sets, building a solid aerobic foundation, and providing a transition to the Senior Squad offering morning workouts and resistance training.  Generally, they have a skill level commensurate with multiple Indiana Age Group time standards and multiple National AA times to Zone times for 12 year olds.  Most of the swimmers in the Gold Squad are 13 years old and older.  Workouts for Gold are offered six days per week and usually last 1½ to 2 hours each day.  Long-course training provides up to 4 hours each day.

Senior coached by Therese Love

The Senior Squad consists of the high school swimmers and other swimmers that strive to make swimming their primary sport and exhibit a high level of swimming and workout ability.  Participation is determined on an individual basis by the Head Coach.  These swimmers are expected to be mature, dedicated, responsible, and dependable. As our more advanced swimmers increase their commitment to swimming, we insist that they maintain good academic standing and a strong practice attendance record.  Swimmers have reached or aspire to reach Senior State, Sectional, and National levels.  These swimmers devote 14 to 18 hours of training in the water, supplemented with a dryland program.  Practices are 1½ to 3 hours long each day for six days per week.  During the summer months, two practice sessions per day are often offered.  During the school year, many of these swimmers participate in school-based programs for five to six months from October to February.
