Pre-Team and Regular Team: The Screamin' Geese train in groups by age and ability.
Pre-Team swimmers are our beginners! They must, at a minimum, be able to swim a combined stroke (kicking while moving their arms outside the water) for 5 yards, submerge (put their face in the water) for 5 - 10 seconds, 5 head bobs, and do a front float. If your child has passed "Strokers 1" at the Rockville pool, this is probably their group! Pre-teamers practice separately from the Regular Team. Please see the Group Calendar tab (month of June) for day and time of pre-team evaluations.
Regular Team (sometimes called A & B Swimmers) - swimmers are able to swim a combined stroke (kicking while moving their arms) for 1 length of the pool unassisted. They must meet the age requirements of the MCSL as published in their annual handbook (maximum age is 18 as of June 1 of the competition year). Officials & Board Members generally have MCSL handbooks for viewing.
Children on the regular team practice at times divided by age, and are separated by ability from lane to lane. Each week, the coaches decide which swimmers will compete in the "A" meet. Those not competing in the "A" meets (Saturday mornings) will be able to compete in the "B" meet (Wednesday evenings). Generally speaking, coaches pick the fastest swimmers in each event for the "A" meets, but due to constantly improving swimmers, those participants will vary from week to week. There are also limitations on the number of events a child may swim in each meet. so that also plays into the coach's choices.
Weekly "B" meets give swimmers the opportunity to post times to qualify in the next "A" meet, so from week to week the participants in the "A" meets will vary based on improvements swimmers make. Coaches will post entries for each "A" meet at the pool and on the website by Thursday evening of each week.
